Samsung’s head of Mobile design resigns after bad S5 criticism

0

Chang Dong-hoon, the former head of Mobile design at Samsung, resigned after the Galaxy S5 recieved poor criticism and its design was not well appreciated by many.  Chang Dong-hoon is said to have filled his resignation last week, and is now replaced by his old VP, Lee Min-hyouk. Lee, acquired the nickname  “Midas” for large contribution in the design of the Galaxy series which has sold over 100 million units.

However according to Reuters, Samsung did not comment on the reshuffle and we can only speculate that the future design of the Samsung devices might change considering that the S series has had multiple patent lawsuits and the design of some device like the Not3 was found to be Tacky, S4  looked cheap and the S5 “dimples” didn’t look so nice and some dubbed  the gold S5 the ‘bandage edition’.

Apple wins case against Samsung but gets only $119.6 million

0

We all thought this would be a billion dollar case judging from the previous case of Apple and Samsung where Apple was rewarded $930 million in damages, this however was different.

After 3 days of intense debate from the jury, they had to decide that Samsung infringed on some of Apple’s patents and in fact all Samsung devices that were accused had infringed on at least one patent.

Apple was awarded $119.6 million in damages which is far wide from the $2.2 billion it was seeking. The Jury ruled that US patent that the Samsung phones had violated Apple’s Patent of ‘Quick Links’ , ‘Slide to Unlock’ which are US Patent number 5,946,647 and 8,046,721 respectively.
Judge Lucy Koh found that patents in relation to Universal search i.e US patent 6,847,959 and the background synchronization were not infringed upon.

The jury also awarded Samsung $152,400 in damages over the camera and folder organization patent which the jury determined that Apple had infringed upon, however Samsung was seeking $6.2 million in damages. The jury decided that Apple had not infringed another patent which was the “video transmission functionality.”

In a rather odd move, Samsung was found to have infringed on a patent but the jury had award no money for the infringement which made Judge Koh to ask the Jury to clarify the matter in half an hour but the Jury choose to return on Monday

Skype group video calling is now free

0

Well Microsoft seems to have woken up years after rival video messaging platforms like Hangouts accepted free group messaging for everyone.

Today Microsoft announced that it is making group video calls free for everyone, Windows desktop, Mac, and Xbox One users will be able to use the service free of charge. A service was previously only a premium feature which dug $8.99 from users monthly to make group video calls.

Microsoft seems slow at catching up but catching is better than ignoring feature requests and Microsoft says it will listen to its social media platforms’ feedback to improve the group messaging.

Well competition will take a hike since Microsoft adds Skype to every Windows 8 installation

Airtel wants to lend you a data Bundle

0

Airtel Uganda has improved its BeeraKo / Malako service to allow users acquire data on loan. Previously BeeraKo allowed users to borrow airtime which is credited onto the bonus account and can’t bee used to buy a data bundle. Beerako is paid back using airtime inclusive of a service charge.

Airtel now lets its subscribers on both the 070 and 075 prefixes to actually purchase a data bundle on credit and its paid back when you load a new data bundle buy dailing *143#.

The Data bundle advances you can apply for include 25, 50, 100MB , sorry Data hogs like me who use a more data in a day won’t be catered for, besides you must have loaded at least a particular amount of airtime or data in the past 30 days.

A screenshot showing the series of messages you reciece when interacting with Beerako (Data debt) feature

Airtel also has an auto advance feature where they lend you data automatically by dailing *143*1#. Here you will automatically get data bundles after a specific period of time.
The beauty this time is you get the exact amount of Data and you are charged the normal charge when paying back your data advance when you load airtime.

This will come in handy when your data runs out in the wee hours of the night when you are chatting with someone. However paying back debt is not a process many people enjoy, so only borrow when its necessary.

Facebook News Feed went blank and the world didn’t end!

0

The world’s biggest Social network in terms of users ‘Facebook‘ went blank and failed to show what was on our minds for nearly  5 hours for users globally. Users could still access the website but all they could see were images and text showing “No content in this Feed”.

Even the mobile websites and app could not show the Newsfeed, and guess what users had to complain and since Facebook wasn’t showing their views they took their post to platforms like Twitter and Google+ to share their grievances with the social network.

Facebook hasn’t had the best run in terms of availability this year with Facebook owned WhatsApp also going down for a few hours and Instagram’s failure to post images for hours. Well i must be a problem of numbers, however Facebook has many engineers and should make sure this doesn’t happen very often considering that our social networks like Twitter and Google+ seem to be gaining users at a very fast rate.

Why we didn’t kill ourselves and why the world didn’t end?

Its 2014, ever service has a competitior and some competitors end up swaying users to their platforms, remember Telegram during the WhatsApp outage? Telegram’s audience grew greatly. So if you run an IT based product and it shuts down even for 30 minutes, just know competition will always smile.

Twitter, the microblogging website which is renown for spreading messages  and photos during major events and occurrences is where most users tweeted that Facebook was not showing its feed.

Of course, the world didn’t end for Facebook too!

The fix was later restored and users could view their News feed without  a problem

Google is ‘Googlefying’ Android a lot more than you think

0

We have all known Android to be an open source OS owned by Google, at least that’s what the case has been before the launch of Android 4.4 Kitkat where most elements were considered stock. But as Google launched KitKat we say multiple new features that were either exclusive to Nexus or Google Play Edition devices and some apps which were later pushed to the store but are still not open source.

Let’s start with the Google Now Launcher, a launcher that brings the Google Now experience closer to you, just a swipe to the left away, together with that always listening mic waiting for you to awake the Google Now ‘Genie’ in your phone by saying ‘OK Google’.

Wait there is more, Google thinks they should also need you more of your attention by putting themselves in the app you use to view your photos, Google removed the AOSP Gallery app in the Nexus 5 and replaced it with the Photos app that’s part of Google+, How clever because its then easier to share your pictures to Google+ and the images are jumbled up together in one feed and to view your folders you have to swipe then select an option. Keep it in mind that Nexus devices are supposed to have the pure Android experience.

Now Google is in your dialer too, a handy trick but they didn’t push the app code in the AOSP images for kit Kat, it’s a different app on its own, and its default integration in future versions and devices is unknown. Google also wants you to send SMS using their messaging app ‘Hangouts’. Well that’s little too much Google.

They have also made a Camera app replacing the old stock app and they have pushed the app to the Play Store. Something I have loved about Google after Kit Kat because it noticed manufacturers take long to push Android updates so they push individual apps to the store, meaning you can get features in the latest version of android before your OEM makes an update which could take months.

For those who have heavily tweaked versions of android, can return to the ‘Googlefied’ versions by installing some of the native apps Google has put on the play store. Google has also stated that it might disable Google Play Services for new devices that run outdated versions of android and considering that multiple apps by Google like Hangouts, G+, Play Games won’t work without Google Play services meaning you are in trouble, but if manufacturers push updates faster or make phones with the latest Android version then it’s a plus for us.

This is good if you love Google, you ought to if you a true android fan but when if you think its too much, then you might soon have no option.

What’s the Future of android?

With more involvement from Google, we are going to see more Google apps replace the AOSP versions and probably a change in the Android development Guideline since the latest versions of Google’s apps like Keep, Google Calendar, leaked screenshots of Gmail show that Google is actually breaking its guidelines because apps have colored action bars, flat UIs which tend to look a lot like iOS.

This is a sign that we are already seeing the future of android, perhaps through the features Google apps have or the look of recent app updates, the next version of android could get a total overall and its going to have a lot of Google.

Googlefying Android will try to create uniformity of the android experience on multiple devices since OEMs heavily modified android skins like Touch Wiz and Sense because if you don’t like the modified app, you could download the stock Google version and you will almost have the same feel like a Nexus Owner, this might take a while to happen but it has gotten the closest it has since android was launched.

It will only take a matter of time for us to tell whether Android will reach a point where it’s over saturated with both necessary and unnecessary Google apps and features that we shall hate of love.

For now, let us know in the comments below of you think of recent android trends.
