Why and how you should secure your Social Media accounts

1

No matter how often you use your social media accounts, you probably love them because they give your mind and fingers a sense of possession. Some people literally have their lives on social media, starting from date photos, morning selfies down to bad hair days and the saddest of moments all shared to their friends and family online.

But we must not forget that these moments and pieces of text we share online are stored online and we need some bit of security to access them. Well social media security today is usually neglected to the companies and there is little being done to secure our data on a personal level until a tragedy occurs.

Tragedy is that moment when you wake up, unlock the pattern on your phone, open up Facebook but your Facebook password no longer works. You probably receive a WhatsApp message from a friend telling you that you tagged them in a pornographic video. Panic and stress are written all over your face. You try to reset your password but the hacker has already changed your email address on facebook. You call up a friend who is good in I.T only for them to disappoint you or tell you to create a new account and follow the steps below to secure your account.

How? you might ask. Well you are in luck. Below are the ways you should secure your social media accounts;

First let’s start with your email address. Well, you won’t tweet inside your email but remember that an email address is at the bottom layer of everything you sign up for and securing it mandatory because it will help you recover, monitor and reset your social media logins. I personally prefer and recommend Gmail but you might be using Yahoo, Outlook and something else but make sure your email provider has something called Two-factor Authentication.

First you must give your email address a secure password and by secure I mean something that is longer than 8 characters, doesn’t have your name, Bae’s name, your pet’s name and anything obvious. Make sure your password has at least one Capital letter, one small letter, a number and a symbol which should turn out as something like “1Bloody$andletter” (Please never use this example and any password that is listed on this list). It is also important that your security question and answers are something complex which a clever hacker can not guess.

Well everyone has a password no matter how insecure it is but TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION  (2FA) is an extra step everyone should take. Traditionally passwords are based on the model of ‘who you are?’ and ‘what you know?’ which is loosely your username and password respectively. But Two-factor authentication goes a step further by asking you for ‘what you have?’

This  adds a 3rd layer for security in case someone got a hold of your password and username because it requires you to insert a code which is usually sent to you by sms. Or you can set up a two-factor authentication (2FA) code using an app like Authy or Google Authenticator. These apps generate a random code that is in sync with Facebook, Google, WordPress, or any online service so that you use two factor authentication.

You can now laugh when you get a message on your phone for a 2FA code for Facebook yet you aren’t the one logging in because you still have control until you change your password.

Forget about the minor inconvenience you get with the extra step and think about the inconvenience you would get when your angry ex-lover tries to login into your Twitter or Facebook.

A moment of silence for your social media account is worse  than a few seconds of delay.

The first step is adding Two-Factor authentication to your email by going to account settings and security, then implement it on all your social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, WordPress and add this extra layer of security. Here are the steps to setting up 2FA on the commonest social networks; Facebook, Twitter, WordPress.com, Gmail and others

But before we think two-factor authentication is the ultimate solution, we have to think about some idiot proof techniques for internet security such as not telling your password to anyone, not writing your password down and installing a good antivirus on your computer.

Today the online con-man got a little brilliant and there are more techniques to make the ordinary user think they are visiting a genuine website through phishing attacks. Phishing websites usually come from funny links that try to resemble the original domain name of the social network and once you visit them they ask you to re login and store your password on a hacker’s server somewhere.

Please avoid links that ask you to see a photo you missed, something awesome (like really), an offer someone sent you and all and stay away from those “hot” ladies and ‘princes’ in refugee camps with “millions of dollars” that their Uncles left them.

It is always important to make sure you access your social media websites from url that start with https:// and not http:// this will help you avoid phishing attacks and typing your password in the wrong places.

Please, for heaven’s sake try to use the official apps of your social network only unless you are using a verified or re-known 3rd party clients such as TweetDeck, tweetbot which are okay but make sure the app you are using is made by the Owners of any particular social network.

Online security is always changing and becoming a disappointment to some users whose web services get hacked, but it is best to secure your social media on a personal level by having strong passwords, using two-factor authentication, being vigilant.

Remember you might complain that a lot of security might seem like an inconvenience but convenience makes compromise simple.

Top 8 Smart TVs of 2015

0

Rapid technological advancement has affected literally every single aspect of our lives. One of the greatest innovations in the last decade happened in the field of TV technologies. Every year, even though many believed it to be impossible, somehow TVs get better and better. TV screens are bigger, the word high definition (HD) is taken to a completely new level and the clarity of screen is just getting better and better. However, the invention of the smart TV was yet another step further in this direction. This cunning device that can do almost everything that a mobile device can is truly a marvel of modern technology. With this in mind, here is a short list of 5 best smart TVs of 2015.

1.   Samsung Smart TV

We shall start with a TV that received the highest mark by the reviewers in 2015: Samsung Smart TV. Seeing as Samsung is already a celebrated developer in the field of TV and one of the greatest names (if not second greatest, right after apple) in the field of mobile technology, there is no real surprise here. Tizen OS is well optimized on this device and instructions by the Samsung team are really beneficial to their users. Only problems here, which are also present with any other smart TV, are that it takes some time to get accustomed to it.

2.   LG WebOS 2.0

On pair with Samsung Smart TV, here comes a product from one of the Samsung’s greatest competitors LG. LG WebOS 2.0 is a true masterpiece of this technology. On first sight you can tell just how hard the developers worked on the design of its interface. When it comes to the speed of browsing, LG is a bit behind Samsung, however it must be noted that LG WebOS 2.0 did pass HTML 5 test, while the Samsung Smart TV didn’t. All in all, these two devices have their differences and it would be wise to thoroughly thoroughly compare televisions before making your mind for one or the other.

3.   Sony’s Android TV

When it comes to cost efficiency and the simplicity of use, Sony yet again rules unparalleled. An amazing company, which became celebrated by launching one of the greatest gaming consoles this world has ever seen came through once again. Its interface design is quite simple and everything runs as smoothly as possible. The greatest drawback is that the number of applications available for Sony’s smart TV is still quite limited. As for browsing you can do it in various ways including both Google Chrome as well as Opera.

4.   Vizio Smart

Even though the platform of Vizio may seem a bit unfinished, surprisingly this amazing TV is considered to be far superior to both Panasonic and Toshiba. Also, when it comes to cost effectiveness Vizio is head and shoulders above everyone else. This platform is compatible with most apps, so it’s only major error would have to be the fact that HBO Go is still unavailable on this TV.

5.   Roku TV

Although Hisense seem as a wildcard when compared to its renowned western competitors, this Chinese technological giant is in no way inferior. Best proof of this is their newest smart TV Roku which is considered by many to be a true marvel of modern TV technology. When it comes to streaming Roku is second to none, but this is not the only area in which this amazing smart device excels. According to reviews (we had no chance of checking this out on our own) Roku is capable of sustaining more apps at once than any other platform in existence. Quite the surprise indeed.

   6. Sony X900C

This is a great choice of TV, but there’s a catch. It is best for a lighter room, as it does not perform that well in darkness. Also, it has a wide color range and good color accuracy if you view it from an angle. Although it is beautifully designed and very thin, this TV lacks uniformity and has poor blacks. Sony X850C for example, is a much better choice for watching movies, especially because of the better contrast and higher quality of black color.

    7. Samsung JU6700

This particular TV is similar to its predecessor, in terms of picture quality. It also features a better remote control and the screen is conveniently curved. Unlike the aforementioned, this model is a bit better for watching movies in a dark setting and it also boast a very low input lag. There are some flaws however, such as some motion blur, but not too much. It is great for movies that are not in 24p, but when you play an HQ movie, it tends to judder a bit. Anyway, sport buffs will love this TV since the motion blur is just about right for that kind of experience.

    8. Vizio M55-C2

This is a new TV within the Vizio’s Ultra-HD M-Series. It is a full array, 55 inch monster with Ultra-HD picture quality. Its screen is filled with 8.3 million pixels, which scale up your usual satellite or cable, bringing it to 2160p from 1080p, so you can enjoy the highest possible quality. It is an excellent choice for movies, sports and casual watching. Vizio M55-C2 costs around $800 and you will hardly find something better for that kind of money.

All in all, a TV is not something that you buy every day. Because of this it is vital that you do your homework well, analyze every single aspect of the TV you want to get and compare it to its competitors. In the end, you should also try to find a TV that meets all your needs and yet falls in perfectly within your set budget. Even though this is seldom an easy task, countless hours of pleasure that a TV of your dreams can give you will be worth all the trouble.

Samsung releases a ‘Rose gold’ sorry PINK gold Note 5 in South Korea

0

The war between Phone Manufacturers is always spreading to new battle grounds with competition in various aspects which brings us to the legendary struggle between Samsung and Apple. Following the success of the Apple iPhone 6S sales including those of the new colour variant Apple calls Rose Gold which got Apple fans on a frenzy, Samsung has announce two new colour variants to its premium Galaxy Note 5 smartphone in South Korea.

The new colours of the Note 5 are titanium silver and pink gold which we all know is a direct response to the rose gold iPhone. Shameless Samsung even kept the ‘gold’ word in the name but this is a well tonned down shade of pink to the normal eye. But let’s have some mercy considering the innovation curve in technology is almosted stunted and copying is inevitable otherwise things like compatibility and comparison would be difficult.

At least lovers of pink, call it rose gold or pink gold now have a choice between two premium vendors.

OnePlus will unveil the One Plus X phone on October 29th

0

One Plus will not settle with one device this year following the launch of the One Plus Two which got made bloggers and tweeps whining over the flagship’s lack of NFC support. One Plus has published a blog post with an announcement of the launch event on the 24th of October.

The announcement shows an “X” branding on the invites to the event which will take place in London and OnePlus is definitely live stream the event basing on their previous VR launch of the One Plus Two.

The Rumours of the One Plus X are rather disappointing, basing on leaked screenshots, and mediocre specs such as a 1.9Ghz processor and a not so exciting body build that will house the 5.5 display. We will have to wait for the launch date to confirm these rumours and hope that OnePlus doesn’t “settle” this time round

All you need to know about the Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL

1

These guys announced a bunch of devices at the Microsoft event this year, 2015. We have already covered a story on the Surface Book in case you haven’t checked it out yet. In this round, we going to tackle all the need-to-know aspects of these other flagships from the Microsoft Camp, the Microsoft Lumia 950 and 950 XL. We shall, however, concentrate on the specs for the 950 XL as these two devices are quite similar spec-wise.

Starting off is the killa 5.7” Quad HD AMOLED 2560 x 1440 display. This bad boy is joining Team Crispy as you already can tell. This beastly screen will be protected by Gorilla Glass 4.

Next up is the performance department where we have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 which is the latest octa-core generation processor. This device will definitely be running on Windows 10. With USB-C, we get faster file transfer and Fast Charging. There is an extra-large 3340 mAh battery and wireless charging. This battery can take in up to 50% capacity in just 30 minutes of charge. It also includes what Microsoft calls “tablet-class liquid cooling” to allow the phone to handle more powerful chips, which, at the very least, sounds awesome.

In the camera department, the Lumia 950 is rocking a 20 MP sensor that automatically reduces motion blur making photos sharper and more detailed. It also houses a triple LED natural flash that won’t stop you from taking great pics in low lighting environments. This camera will also be able to record video in 4K with Optical Image Stabilization on board.

Other new features include Windows Continuum and Windows Hello Beta. What Windows continuum does essentially is to enable you to scale up Windows apps like Work, Excel and Edge for PC-Like experience on an external monitor. While Windows Hello Beta on the other hand, helps you to unlock your phone simply by looking directly at the screen. It uses the Infra-Red camera technology for authentication.

The one big difference between the two phones is that the 950XL includes an octa-core processor, while the 950 uses a hexa-core processor. The Lumia 950 XL will be going for $649 as early as next month.

Microsoft answers Apple with an even Faster Surface Book

2

Tell Microsoft to lose a competition and ask for a pony while at it. These guys never lose.
What’s going on my homies? Hope you are in the process of upgrading your laptop artillery because, Microsoft has something good for you. Apple is well known for always claiming about how each product they release is the best in the world or the best they have ever made.
Borrowing a leaf from their close friends, Microsoft bluntly uttered that “This is the fastest 13-inch laptop ever made anywhere on any planet – it’ll be twice as fast as the Mac Book Pro.”
This oddly shaped thing Microsoft calls a Surface Book can double as a Tablet with a fully detachable screen and back-lit keyboard all cased in a magnesium body.

Surface Book
Surface Book

Being it’s first laptop, Microsoft has really surprised us by pulling off that 267PPi 13.5 inch display. It actually looks amazing… Am certainly leaving Team Retina Display.
The surface book rocks the latest Intel Core i5 and i7 processors, with Nividia GeForce GPU and upto 16 RAM. To optimally dig into its beastly power, you need to keep the screen docked to its keyboard where all its power is located. It is said to run for 12 hours on a single charge which is, a few hours longer than the Mac Book. The keyboard dock also comes with two USB 3.0 ports and an SD slot which is quite obvious although, USB-C is the in thing right now.

Oh and one more thing, the Surface book also supports the Surface Pen hahahaha what’s happening to people and these Styli? Anyhow… Surface Pen as you would expect must claim to be better than the Apple Pencil.

It’s ok for Apple to be worried or feel worse because honestly, what did it expect…. To dominate the world alone? Gerr outta here man, am saying…

That’s it amigos get ready to burst out that $1,499 or $2,699 if you feel like it, till next time… adios
