Apple has refreshed the iMac with its M6 chip, promising faster everyday performance, stronger on-device AI processing and improved connectivity. The all-in-one desktop retains its 24-inch 4.5K Retina display and seven colour choices.

Announced on October 27, the updated iMac is available with up to a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU. Neural Accelerators in the GPU work alongside a Dual 16-core Neural Engine to handle AI tasks, including running language models locally.

Performance and connectivity

Apple says the M6 iMac can deliver up to twice the graphics performance of the M4 version in selected tasks. It also claims up to five times faster on-device AI prompt processing than M4 in LM Studio. These are manufacturer benchmarks for specific workloads, so they should not be read as a uniform improvement across every app.

Wireless connectivity moves to Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The higher-end 12-core configuration offers a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet option and four Thunderbolt 4 ports. Support for up to two external 6K displays gives users room to expand their workspace.

The built-in display reaches 500 nits of brightness, with a nano-texture option on the higher-end configuration. The iMac also includes a 12MP Center Stage camera with Desk View, a six-speaker audio system and colour-matched accessories.

Prices start at $1,499

The entry model, with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, starts at $1,499 in the US. The 12-core CPU and GPU version starts at $1,699. US education prices begin at $1,449 and $1,599 respectively.

Pre-orders open October 28 and availability begins November 6 in participating markets. Buyers can choose blue, green, pink, yellow, purple, orange or silver. The announcement does not specify Uganda pricing or a local launch date.
