Apple has announced a redesigned MacBook Pro with a tandem OLED screen and touchscreen controls, marking the arrival of touch input on its pro laptop. Unveiled on October 28, the new range comes in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes with M5 Pro or M5 Max chips.
The display, which Apple calls PROLED XDR, is the centrepiece of the update. It supports brightness of up to 2,000 nits, an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz, and both P3 and Adobe RGB colour spaces. An optional nano-texture finish is intended to reduce glare.
Touch controls and a lighter design
Users can swipe through pages, pinch to zoom and interact directly with creative apps. Apple says existing apps can translate touches into clicks, while developers can build more specialised touch experiences. Dynamic Island also comes to the Mac as a place for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI, subject to feature availability.
The 14-inch model weighs about 3 pounds and the 16-inch version about 4 pounds. Apple claims up to 24 hours of battery life, although actual endurance will depend on use and configuration.
Configurations support up to 128GB of unified memory and 16TB of storage. Connectivity includes three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack, alongside Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
Pricing and availability
US prices start at $2,899 for the 14-inch M5 Pro model and $3,399 for the 16-inch M5 Pro. M5 Max versions start at $4,499 and $4,799 respectively. Pre-orders open October 28, with deliveries and store availability beginning November 6 in participating markets.
The announcement does not establish Uganda pricing or a local release date. Apple’s performance and battery figures are manufacturer claims, rather than independent test results.
