LastPass got hacked but do not panic

0

The master password service LastPass has posted on its blog stating that it noticed and blocked suspicious activity on its network on Friday.  LastPass claims that no encrypted user Vault data was taken however, LastPass account email addresses, password reminders, server per user salts, and authentication hashes were compromised.

LastPass is politely telling users not to panic or necessarily change their passwords because they trust their level of encyrption since it uses an authentication hash with a random salt and 100,000 rounds of server-side PBKDF2-SHA256.

Users who will try to login into their LastPass accounts on new devices and IP addresses will be asked to verify their accounts by email except for those who have two factor authentication enabled.

If you have a weak master password or if you have reused your master password on any other website, please update it immediately. Then replace the passwords on those other websites.

Because encrypted user data was not taken, you do not need to change your passwords on sites stored in your LastPass vault. As always, we also recommend enabling multifactor authentication for added protection for your LastPass account. – LastPass

It is embarrassing for a service that is aimed at giving users the comfort of security being compromised, but hey it technology and almost everything can be broken into.

Microsoft unveils an Xbox Elite Wireless Controller

0

Microsoft has unveiled a new Xbox Elite Wireless controller during the E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) press event. The redesigned controller has  four bumper pads under the grips, a textured rolling pad that replaces the standard D-pad and hair trigger locks for more precise control. The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller features multiple replaceable parts considering that most controllers wear out after long hours of play.

Microsoft says the controller will be compatible with Xbox and Windows 10

Skype is retiring its Windows 8 app in favour of the Desktop version

0

Skype is retiring the Modern UI version of the app on July  7. On that date, users of the touch-friendly version app will be transitioned over to the traditional version of Skype. Previously Microsoft maintained two versions of its video conferencing software Skype.

The Windows 8 Store version is being discontinued which will pave way for a universal touch friendly desktop version of Skype in Windows 10. This ends the consumer confusion for customers who had both version of Skype installed on their computer and sometimes notifications and messages got mixed up.

This moves comes after Microsoft announced Windows 10 where one app runs on all devices. Plus the Windows 8 (Modern UI) version of Skype was unpopular and usually laggy.

iOS 9 will enable Ad blocking in Safari

0

The newly announced iOS 9 will enabled users block advertisements on websites in the Safari browser. This comes after Ricky Mondello (an Apple Engineer) tweeted a developer session where developers can create extensions for iOS 9 to block “content”.

Ricky added that content Blocking works in Safari and SFSafariViewController which means that content blockers would be able to block some ads in iOS 9 apps that use the SFSafariViewController library to show webpages. The blockers will work pervasively unlike Javascript implementations which are triggered per page.

This announcement comes after Apple launched a revamped Newsstand app which curates content from multiple publishers during the WWDC 2015 conference.

It is absurd that Apple is allowing Advertisement blockers in its native browser considering that thousands of digital publishers struggle to monetize their content through paid advertisement and blocking adverts means less revenue generated.

Twitter now supports landscape video recording for its mobile Apps

0

I am personally not a fan of portrait (tall) video recordings because they looked cropped and in fact the Google Camera app had found a way to disable you from recording portrait video. But due to the trending of live streaming and short video sharing apps like Vine, portrait and cropped videos had become the trend and twitter adopted them when it introduced native video recording in its app.

Twitter tweeted that Twitter users on Android and iOS are now able to capture and share video recordings in landscape views (wide) , something that was previously not possible for God knows what reason.

It’s nice that users can snap and share video in its proper view.

The Namugongo Surveillance balloon

2

A few days ago, 3rd June to be exact; Ugandans were all talking about that balloon thingy that was floating around in Namugongo.
This sophisticated piece of equipment caused a lot of noise among Ugandans about how it works, how much it could have cost and it also made it to headlines on every single News bulletin cross the country and am pretty sure also some nearby countries were in shock as well.

Let’s get the details down for this alien that appeared a few days ago. This balloon or blimp is considered to be the best equipment for monitoring borders, facilities and army bases. Similar to drones and those spy-flying devices in movies, this balloon comes with cutting edge cameras and sensors that enable you to zoom down on an ant walking on the ground. Yes, don’t argue.
These blimps provide real time surveillance and intelligence essential for protection and carrying out tactical operations. They are made by an Israel Company called RT Aerostats that was founded in 1996.
The biggest argument this balloon raised was about how much it cost. This 2-person controlled, helium floating, high-tech camera having balloon doesn’t cost a couple of thousand shillings, not even millions of Shillings but a few million dollars about 20. Uganda isn’t broke it’s probably your head that is broke.

So, these Ugandan affandes deployed this bad boy at Namugongo and all these terrorists, phone snatchers and drunkards failed to report for business. The brave ones that managed to report for duty had their eyes locked on the floating thing in amazement. All went well; even I was there at Namugongo. There you have it folks.

Skylake micro architecture from Intel

0

Skylake is a code-name for a micro architecture processor of Intel as we can say for now. This Skylake micro architecture is scheduled to be launched in 2015 and will replace the Broadwell Micro architecture.

This will of course be an Upgrade in Intel’s micro architecture design. This will definitely bring in more CPU and GPU performance and of course reduced power consumption. The Skylake is scheduled to be released at the Intel Development Forum to take place on 15th August, 2015.

Intel has gone ahead to consider Skylake to be its “most significant processor” for a decade simply due to the enhanced power efficiency and wire-free capabilities.

The Skylake will come in four variants SKL-S, SKL-H, SKL-U and SKL-Y. An overcloackable SKL-K variant will also launch around the same time.

Skylake chips will not be released when Windows 10 becomes commercially available on July 29th. Intel though, has built Skylake to work with the core features of Windows 10 including biometric authentication allowing fingerprint or face to replace a typed password.

Many big names in the Tech industry are pretty psyched about Wire-free computing. Intel wants to eliminate wire and cable cluster from PCs by offering wireless charging and data transfer circuitry. This will enable users to recharge their laptops by placing them on tablets that support wireless charging based on magnetic resonance technology. Intel has gotten restaurants, airplanes, cafes and car makers to install wireless charging surfaces.

More on the data transfer in the Skylake chipsets, through a technology called WiGig, laptops will wirelessly connect to portable hard drives, monitors and other external peripherals transferring data at 7Gbps. Thunderbolt 3 will also start with Skylake, a new data transfer technology running on USB Type-C cables transferring data at 40Gbps. Thunderbolt 3 is 2 times faster than its predecessor and four times faster than USB 3.1 technology. You can still plug your USB 2.0 flash disk in the Thunderbolt port but it’s only a question whether you need the blistering speeds.
