There are a couple of smartphone accessories in circulation right now that you probably don’t need.  Today in this yet amazing post from the gurus of GURU8, we are going to focus our vision on those accessories people are buying in excitement or total ignorance.

1. Selfie stick
Yes, you don’t need that kiboko. How do you even move around with that thing, like a herdsman? This Nkoni is rather effective when it comes to increasing the shot’s angle range. Problem is, the stick gets in the way. It will always be seen in your pictures unless you have some ninja-photography skills. Some do come with a remote that means all the hands will be busy leading to no peace✌sign in the photo. You also have to be careful while using these as you can easily injure somebody.

2.Power banks
I know you think its a trend, no it’s not. These are made for people with very weak batteries and yet want to use their phones like some sort of super computer. If you have good battery utilization skills, you can take about 6-10 hours on a single charge. But if your phone requires charging every 10 minutes, it’s wiser to invest in a new battery than a power bank. Uhmm, Iphone homies and all those guys that have phones with no removable batteries, you probably have the cash so send them back for replacement or just buy new phones 😂

3. Designer cases.
These are commonly known as covers around here. The very first thing a case must ensure is the protection of the phone then aesthetics and design follow. What’s the use of you having a Louis Vuitton case that can’t absorb all the shock when your device hits a hard surface. The ones that really get to my nerves are the Flip Cases. These make one look just like a Sugar daddy. Why would anyone who still has his sanity use a flip Case? They rather look stylish but for some unknown reason, everyone that owns one tends to take a selfie in front of a mirror.

4.Touch Screen gloves.
But Ugandans can mean to be wise. Are we in winter or something. Okay for the boda guys, I totally support you because you need gloves. But then again these are “gloves” which boda guy puts on gloves. KCCA and the police had to forcefully put helmets on their heads. We all love Ugandans.

5. Bluetooth headsets
Gundi, remove on us your village. What’s the purpose of you walking around all day with this thing hurting your ear and only get 5 calls. These used to be pretty cool back in the day, I won’t deny. But honestly that coolness period elapsed. Show us how cool you are by buying the Virtual Reality headsets, Holo lens, Google Glass and stuff. If not, just get Earphones already.

Samsung unveils two Galaxy Tab S2 tablets and they are damn thin

Samsung has announced two premium Galaxy Tab S2 tablets following the flagship previous Tab S tablet released last year. The Galaxy Tab S2 will come in two 8 inch and 9.7 inch size variants. These new tablets are incredibly thin at 5.6mm which is thinner than the iPad and try to adopt a close to the S6 design in a attempt to give them a premium look.

The Galaxy Tab S have a screen resolution of 2048×1536 on a 4.3 screen ratio QXGA Super AMOLED display on both the 8.0 inch and 9.7 inch variant which is the same resolution you will get on the Google Nexus 9 and iPad.

There is a fingerprint scanner, an 8MP AF rear camera accompained by a 2.1 MP selfie camera, 3G RAM, Quad 1.9GHz + Quad 1.3GHz, Octacore application processor running 5.0 Lollipop with physical navigation buttons (bloody Samsung).

The Tab S2 8.0 inch will weigh 265g for the Wifi-Only Model and 272g for the LTE+Wifi model with a 4000mAh battery and the slightly heavier Tab S2 9.7 inch will weigh 389g and 392g for the Wifi-Only and LTE-Wifi models respectively with a 5,870mAh battery.

These tablets will go on sale in August however Samsung has not unveiled the price yet but I expect them to be quite high considering its Samsung’s “premium” lineup.

How Africa uses online food delivery – Mobile vs desktop orders

Africa’s leading food delivery marketplace hellofood has released an infographic showing how the emerging mobile market impacts online food delivery in Africa.

Worldwide, mobile penetration is constantly on the rise. Particularly rapid growth can be observed in emerging markets such as many African countries. In 2014, the growth rate of mobile orders on hellofood reached 50% on the continent, facilitated by the increasingly affordable prices of smartphones ($40). This has a great impact on millions of people’s every-day lives.

Studies have shown that most Africans use their mobile phones predominantly to listen to music and interact with friends and relatives on social media. Taking pictures and browsing the web for information were also listed among the most common activities. But when it comes to mobile banking and payment, most users still seem slightly wary.
This caution was also observed by the online food delivery service hellofood. However, last year the online delivery platform counted the same quantity of orders from mobile phones as from desktops: both accounted for 50% of the total. As mobile phone usage and thus mobile orders is strongly rising, the amount is expected to surpass desktop orders shortly.

Some countries are already mobile-first, for example Tanzania, where 79% of customers order food on their phones. Egypt (56%) and Ivory Coast (54%) have also shifted to mostly mobile orders. The other countries still make the majority of orders via desktop, with Ghana (69%) and Nigeria (61%) having the highest numbers of desktop orders.

In order to meet the customers’ reservations about online payment, many companies, including hellofood, use cash-on-delivery services. This allows online companies to overcome issues of trust regarding internet businesses. Flexible payment methods are important; as such a huge percentage of business in Africa is still being done via cash-on-delivery to avoid the seemingly unsafe process of mobile banking. This payment method will remain predominant until the general perception changes along with the increase in mobile phone usage.

MTN Uganda now lets you share Data bundles

MTN Uganda just unveiled it’s data sharing feature which will allow MTN Uganda subscribers share from as little as 5MB of data with friends, family and whoever they want. You can are able to share data worth 5MB up to 1000MB (roughly a a gigabyte).

Here are the steps to share data on MTN Uganda

Dial *150*60# then wait for a prompt which will enable you enter a preffered number to send the data to and then another prompt with will show up enabling you to input the amount of data you want to send in megabytes.

This is different from buying someone else a data bundle in a way that you can now share a bundle you have already bought. Wait…haven’t I seen this promo on another telecom.

Apple Music in Uganda will cost $4.99 per month

Uganda is one of the 100 countries where Apple Music will be globally available following its launch on 30th June. The music streaming service is available globally and its pricing is different depending on the country you are signing up from.

Subscriber to Apple Music in Uganda will pay $4.99 per month (about 16541.85 Ugx) for individual plans and $7.99 (about 26486.85 Ugx) for family plans. Remember Apple is giving a three month trial of Apple Music and users will be billed after the trial ends.

Apple Music and Beats 1 radio require users in Uganda to sign in with an Apple ID and you must have a payment option on the service which means you must link you Apple ID to VISA or Mastercard to use the service which is a huge setback for those whose banks do not allow online VISA transactions in Uganda which is still a major setback for users in Uganda.

Its good to know that Apple Music is cheaper than Spotify which requires me to pretend I live in a developed nation and pay to stop the app from auto logging out due to location when I don’t pay for premium.

he only disadvantage is that most smartphones in Uganda are running Android which means users are currently restricted to using iTunes on PCs and Macs and iPads and iPhones running iOS 8.4. But keep calm because Apple is promising to release and Android app later on this year (fall).

You will need to update your iTunes version and iOS version to at least 8.4 to use Apple Music.

The website is rather simple to use and lightweight too (They probably care about your data bundle). The sign up process doesn’t ask for much and the ability to sign in with LinkedIn and Facebook is available and it will save you minutes of building your CV.

Everjobs search is highly functional and it addresses the problems most Job search faces such as finding companies with Job offering and all this is properly categorized according to a designated career field. You just need to click one button to apply for a job, however you will need your CV to be at least 55% complete.

The platform helps you generate a CV (Curriculum Vitae) by entering your details in categories, including what your Job interest are, what your looking for, where you have worked before and the level of proficiency in languages you speak. After entering all this information there is a cool button to generate your CV as a PDF. Talk about being saved from pannick attacks when you can’t find your CV.

Everjobs also gives you a dashboard with notifications about the jobs you applied for and you can quickly find the saved jobs in case you needed time thinking about a particular opportunity. The dashboard also alerts you when a recruiter checks your application which should give you a reasonable amount of hope.

Everjobs also aides recruiters/ employers time wasted going through paper based CVs, by enabling filters and considering that the applications come in the same format, going through them is a really simple process. Recruiters can also check the Everjobs database to search for potential recruits by viewing their CVs and contact them through email or phone however contact information will not be available because Everjobs values these as its assests.

Everjobs launched in Uganda today at a fully filled press event at Protea. Everjobs is a startup which aides people search and apply for jobs online  together with the ability to receive feedback. Call it a job board if you can.

Eric Lauer the co-founder of Everjobs in Africa and Managing Director of Everjobs in Africa started the event with the usual slides showcasing insights on Uganda’s GDP and the job sector. Eric shared how the company has shareholders like Rocket Internet and MTN to enable the stability.

Greater employability and more opportunites for all – Everjobs

It aims to simplify the job application process in Uganda which is usually done offline and this process is usually slow and tiresome. Everjobs solves problems of job seekers and recruiters which include limited access to information, limited links with HR and Professional network on the side of Job seekers. Everjobs also intends to solves the problems of time lost from paper-based CVs, limited pool of relevant candidates, shortages of technical expertise and the risk of fake CVs.

Ronald the global co-founder of Everjobs shared that Everjobs is a free service for job seekers. However recruiters can also search the Everjobs database to finds potential employees however contact information will not be available because Everjobs values these as its assets.

Everjobs will not only stop online but it will also visit Universities to train students on how to venture into the job market. This is one of their niches when you compare them to competition.

A Material theme is now available for the Galaxy S6 andS6 Edge

Samsung users are familiar to the heavily skinned OS from Samsung dubbed TouchWiz which not so many people like. In fact every year we pray Samsung tonnes it done to look more like stock Android.

Lucky S6 and S6 Edge users now have a Material Design based theme in the S6 and S6 Edge’s theme store. This theme gives the flagship a more lollipop feel as compared to the cluttered default touchwiz skin. This brings a Nexus like design to a Samsung Devices.

The ‘Material’ Theme which was designed by Samer Zayer combines a blend of material wallpapers, icons, lockscreen, settings, app launcher, calculator, dialer, clock, messaging and notification area got a material/ lollipop feel.

Considering that this Theme is deeply integrated into the S6 and S6 Edge Theme Store, there is no way we can link to it but you will need to search for a theme called “Material” and just in case their annoying search feature doesn’t bring it up, you can check the “New Themes” or “Themes for Man”

Undo Send in Gmail for web is now available to all

Google has been working on its ‘undo send’ button in its labs as a beta (Labs) feature for roughly six years. The undo send feature was later unveiled in the Inbox by Google on 28th May (as seen in the video) but today Google has announced that the feature is publically available to every one who turns the feature on.

The feature is turned off by default for those not currently using the Labs version, and can be enabled from the General tab in Gmail settings.

People currently using the Labs version of ‘Undo Send’ will have the setting turned on by default at launch.
