Idroid Uganda and Uganda Telecom announce discount sale

0

Uganda Telecom from the start of this year partnered with smart phone makers idroid to offer their customers a range of choice in their portfolio of services. Last week, the idroid simu as an offer was being sold at a discounted price. Idroid phones which have since been dubbed “Uganda’s favourite smart phones” were launched in Uganda in early 2015 taking the market by storm with their incredible technology.

This week, idroid and UTL announced a DEMO SALE where idroid phones were being sold at discounted prices. They also launched an open box sale where their new range of smart phones were available at 40% off retail prices for the next 5 days only at UTL headquarters, Kampala.

Idroid and UTL have in the recent past decided to carry out activations to reach their customers. Speaking about the demo sale, UTL Brand Manager Bright Baba said the initiative was in line with the brand’s commitment to provide services that are affordable for their customers. He said “UTL has always been the network of choice for the Ugandan customer who wants affordable prices. Our partnership with a brand like idroid cements this commitment because the phones that they are selling are a favourite of most of our customers. We will continue to give them the best”.

Idroid Africa co-founder Jawad Qureshi on his part lauds UTL’s marketing drive that aims at taking services closer to the people. He also praises the idroid phone which he says is a easy to use high end gadget that is loved in the smartphone market. “idroid smartphones are made with the customer in mind. We aspire to give our customers technologically advanced handsets at an affordable cost. Our partnership with UTL is also a move in the right direction” he asserted.

Uganda Telecom whose trading tagline is “all for you” steadily continues to grow its customer base while idroid which took the market by storm last year has gained ground to become a very respectable brand.

MTN Uganda now has monthly SMS bundles and here is a list

0

MTN Uganda recently added a few bundles for it’s customers to buy. These new sms bundles are an addition to voice bundles that MTN introduced last year. We have previously seen the telecom adapt Voice bundle rates from the re-known ‘mother of bundles’ (Airtel). I recently noticed that MTN introduced new SMS bundles for users who still love using traditional SMS. Previously only daily SMS bundles were available for purchase but these are the new bundles which also include sms bundles for people to send messages to non-MTN numbers.

Below is a list of MTN Uganda’s SMS bundles;

Bundle SMS Volume (Cost UGX)
Daily Bundle (MTN to MTN only) 100 SMS 200/=
Daily  Bundle (MTN to MTN only) 200 SMS 300/=
Daily Bundle (MTN to MTN only) 400 SMS 500/=
Weekly Bundle (MTN to MTN only) 700 SMS 1000/=
Monthly  Bundle (To all networks) 25 SMS 1000/=
Monthly  Bundle (To all networks) 65 SMS 2000/=
Monthly  Bundle (To all networks) 200 SMS 5000/=
Monthly Unlimited (MTN to MTN only) 4000 SMS 5000/=

These new bundles enable users send text messages for as little as 1.25/= per message for the daily bundles. Let us know what you think of MTN Uganda’s SMS bundles in the comments below.

Yoza App Review: Getting your laundry done

0

We all get lazy, and the guys at Yoza know this. That is why they created an app to aide us get our laundry done. Yoza which means “wash” is a service which enables you find people to wash your laundry basing on your location.

The Yoza app which is currently available on android is straight to the point and comes with a green material design. The app itself is small at a mere 6.2 MBs on the Google Playstore which should be cheap.

You are greeted by a splash screen and a login form when you open the app. The signup was pretty simple. Basically it’s your name, phone number and location. The app is good at locating where you are using GPS and it automatically finds a region that is known to the service. The location isn’t local council specific but at area level it’s good enough. The search tab will be quite helpful when searching for a new area.

I managed to select Makerere as my residential area and I found 3 washers at the time of review. Selecting someone to wash your laundry is as simple as tapping their name and a call option appears. Each washer has reviews and comments from people who have been aided by his or her service. There is also an option for a profile picture which few washers had used by the time of review. The washers wash from your home and Yoza doesn’t take away any of the clothes.

Yoza also has specific packages targeted at particular groups like students. The student package comes in at a manageable 80,000/- (Uganda shillings) for an entire semester. Other packages cost 100,000/- , 200,000/- , and 1,000,000/- for the Standard, Premium and Family packages respectively.

YozaPackages

Using the app is pretty simple, much simpler than doing your laundry. The user interface is rather clean and free from clutter. It is even gentle on your mobile data as it’s data consumption is really minimal. Their is even a beta app for those who want to try out the new features before they go public. Beware of a few crushes though.

The book a washer feature enables you select a washer based on gender, how often you want the service, and whether you would like them to clean your house or wash your laundry.

Yoza is a really revolutionary service in Uganda because it solves a problem that didn’t have a simple fix. You will definitely have more time on your ‘softer’ hands. Clicking the Download button to get the app from Google Playstore should be without hesitation. I mean who wouldn’t want their laundry done.

TOP 8 Occasions to use the Hellofood App.

1 | When you are Living on a Budget

This occasion takes first priority, because it is January a time of the year when most are very frugal with their finances, meaning a strict balancing of all expenses. Eating out is now more of a luxury, therefore being able to save on transport and time trying to drive to a restaurant when at home or office; one can instead just place an order for a meal in their budget range and also be able to get more from the many meal deals on the hellofood platform.

2 | When you need to look busy

You know that awkward moment when you’re at a party in company of other people and everyone else is busy on their phones or when you are waiting for someone who hasn’t reached and you take out your phone to look like you’re busy? Yes we’ve all been there. What’s more awkward is pretending to be on a call and have your phone ring mid-way. Here’s a better idea, open up the hellofood app and order food. Then when your friends are done with whatever they are doing on their phones or when they finally show up, tell them you’ve suddenly got dinner at home and leave. You get to have your revenge on your anti-social or tardy friend for being late, and you get to go home to a hot meal. Win win!!

3 | When you’re lazy to cook

This goes without saying. Everyone is lazy to do something at some point in their lives. Even boiling or frying an egg is a hassle sometimes and you do not feel like punishing your palates with just bread and water. hellofood solves this by delivering what you are actually craving for. It’s as simple as that.

4 | When you have a hot date

Am sure we have all read or heard that a date that knows how to cook is a keeper, well that is changing to a date that knows how to order for the right meal is a definite keeper (times have changed or a changing). How about the option of a boring, awkward date at a crowded and noisy restaurant, plus an even heftier bill after? We’re having none of that! Order food home, get some candles and dig in with hands. It’s so much more personal and intimate, and you can have much better conversation and even add a touch of the music you and your date actually prefer.

Also, they’ve just given you the ultimate win of getting them in your house already even before the date commences. Smooth or what? (Forget about the Netflix and chill, this is 2016)
5 | When you give up on food altogether

Frustrations run high when you’re just so done with the same old food and can’t decide what to eat. Even worse if  you walked into office expecting the cafeteria food to be different seeing as it is a new year. Here’s why the hellofood app saves the day: open up the app, close your eyes, pick something, order and you’re done! (Surprise Your-self, with over 25 different cuisines on the platform, you are bound to be surprised) everyone loves a surprise.

You can thank us later. Also, watch this space for Valentines campaign coming up in February.

6 | When you need an excuse to not go out

Do you know when you are at office with a heavy work load or at home in pajamas and ready to laze up on the couch and do absolutely nothing, but then your pesky friends call and force you out for meal? Use our hellofood app and order in. So when they call and try to force you out, you now have a legitimate reason to stay in because you have food on the way. It’s definitely NOT because you are too broke to buy your-self food lazy or too lazy to shower.

7 | When you need to surprise a friend or family member

One of the unique features with the hellofood app is that it allows you to order food for someone else and surprise them; this is the option to pay for the meal using MTN mobile money. Nothing says ‘I love you’ or “I care about you” like warm meal or confectionary at their door. So even if you are miles away, you can still surprise that special someone. Order a meal or cake for them and it will be delivered with tender loving care.

8 | When you’re just plain hungry

For as long as you are human, hunger is part of life, though we do not live to eat, we all eat to live, meaning everyone has a reason to use the hellofood app. You’re hungry?  hellofood has an app for that. You place your order and it is delivered to your home or office, you are happy.

Review: Uganda Waragi added flair to ordering for your liquor online

Uganda’s oldest indigenous spirit decided to add some tech to the way its consumers order it’s spirit. Uganda Waragi launched a Facebook App which allows Ugandans order Uganda waragi using their internet enabled devices.

You will no longer have to drive to that cheap supermarket to stock up the 3 flavors of Uganda Waragi at the recommended Retail price. All you do is order the amount you want, punch in your address and your waragi is delivered to your location.

ugandaWaragi

Well the experience is as simple as clicking the “Shop Now” or “Buy Uganda Waragi” buttons on the Facebook page. Another page loads within the Facebook page showing you instructions and a list of the items you can order.

UGcart

Ordering is as simple as either typing in the number or using the arrows to enter the quantity of  Uganda Waragi you want, adding to cart, and Then clicking the ‘Checkout’ button. You are presented with a form where you enter your details such as Name, phone number, location and date of birth. The date of birth is not make sure they do no sale alcohol to anyone below the age of 18.

UgDetails

During my review the online experience was generally smooth on PC but I was not so pleased with the delivery time which can go up two days. (Maybe it was because I ordered on a Sunday,….. which should be a reasonable day to have my order in time) You however get an email confirming your order and it contains a number to call to confirm the status of your order. The delivery fee is just a mere 2,000/- for places around Kampala.

Using Facebook is great since it has a large number of users in Uganda but we are currently limited to it. No android or iOS dedicated app is available but Facebook is idiot-proof meaning the process will be very simple. The only problem is that when you try to open the Facebook app on a mobile phone, it opens the blown up desktop version which might not be an exciting experience.

Uganda Waragi will throw in a gift if you order two bottles of Uganda Waragi if you order two bottles. At the time of writing it was another bottle which means you get 3 for the price of two.

It is a simple and unique innovation in the Ugandan market which we enjoyed during our test at the office. We would however be happier if EABL deployed this app on more platforms besides Facebook. Please don’t forget to drink responsibly.

CES Trends and Predictions for 2016

0

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) came to an end, but the future it brings is yet to come. CES plays an important role in the tech world. Companies and startups use this exhibition opportunity to show off their most interesting technological concepts. In reality though, many of the products are not that intriguing. We will present a few trends that will definitely become big in 2016.

Virtual Reality Headsets get Real

htcVive
Two companies are in the virtual reality race. Namely, HTC and the famous Oculus Rift. HTC has developed a VR headset with a built-in camera for the added option of seeing the real world around you. The virtual reality elements are then being layered onto the original footage. I find that extremely convenient since it excludes the possibility of trampling over objects in the actual room while using the rig.

According to HTC, Vive will have been released by the end of April 2016. This information is to be taken with a pinch of salt, since they first wanted to release it at the beginning of 2015. They still do not mention the price.

Oculus Rift, on the other hand, has always been a symbol of innovation. Unfortunately, not that many people have actually had access to it in its early stages. From now on anyone will be able to purchase it. More precisely, it will be available by the end of March and it will cost around $600.

OK, so how widespread will these new devices actually be? Most people will not give up 600 dollars for a VR rig. Still, I am sure that many technology buffs and gamers will love it. I know I will. A regular consumer will most probably go with the mobile phone VR headset. This is not a good experience, to tell the truth, since the technology is still under development. Oculus Rift and HTS’s Vive are really the only two products that can offer enjoyment when virtual reality is in question.

Smart Gadgets get Smarter

smartwatch

Smart this, smart that, everything is smart. A lot of companies that exhibit at CES bring out their weird pieces of tech just to see if something sticks. Of course, we all know of smart refrigerators, but what about a smart consumer router that is at the same time a security device? Or, a rubber duck that lets you know when the water is too hot via Bluetooth? Yep, it is all there, but let us not dwell on the weird side of smart.

There are companies that are at the forefront of innovation and product practicality. Such startups and enterprises often rely on attracting young talent that will bring something new to the idea pool. Consequently, wearables are getting increasingly popular. Casio has released a new Android Wear watch that will even be fit to be used for military purposes. That is pretty amazing! Furthermore, a company called FitBits released a smart fitness tracker that for once resembles a real watch. Looking smart Fitbits!

Some devices just do not have to be smart. You know what I mean? I do not need smart scissors to tell me how much nails I have cut. But some devices are extremely useful, like smart audio systems, wearables, connected TVs etc. But manufacturers are now just throwing things at consumers and making notes of what sticks. So be smart about what a smart device is.

Drones get Bigger

drone

Flying a drone is probably one of the most interesting new hobbies to emerge from modern technology. However, most consumers do not really ue drones. At CES they are everywhere, but then again we all do not have a big use for them. Yet.

Amazon and Walmart are in a race of bringing delivery drones to you as a service. Construction companies use them to oversee their workers and tough to reach parts of the building. They are used by real estate agents for taking pictures of houses. A company from China even wants to create taxi drones. So drones are getting big enough to squeeze in a human. Pretty neat stuff.

Computers, Mobile Devices and TVs get Neglected

phone

Finally, the CES stories are not all about mobile phones, new computers and tablets. Of course, there is a great number of new pieces of consumer hardware that we will love, but none of them will completely replace what you already have. Innovations have been made, but your computer is still up to date. They are out of focus now, and have become less interesting. It is a good thing, because we no longer have to worry about keeping up with the compatibility updates.

So, the new tech trends are plenty. Computers and mobile are not that interesting anymore. Make way for taxi drones, wearables, smart cars and a lot more devices with smart as a prefix. Let us just hope they will not come up with a smart brain or something similar. That would just be too much. But, we welcome all the useful pieces technology that emerge and readily move toward our cyber future.

Vodafone Uganda silently lowered its fair usage cap to a terrible 128kbps

4

Vodafone Uganda, a telecom launched early last year with the best unlimited internet packages we had ever reviewed or experienced. The unlimited internet package was cheap and fast since the previous Fair usage Cap (FUP) was at 256 kbps once the FUP data was depleted.

Some users didn’t even have this cap implemented on their router sim cards after our extensive tests while other had the 256 kbps cap activated and the internet experience was rather bad. It’s not until about 3 weeks ago when I noticed the ‘Unlimited Internet speeds’ were unbearable once one had exceeded 35, 50, 60 GB depending on their package.

A visit to the Vodafone website shows that the document was indeed changed to reflect the new misarable fair usage policy which limits you to 128 kbps. For starters 128 kbps is quite slow but the problem is this is a limit to both downloads and uploads which means you won’t be able to get a download over 100 kbps since this is a shared connection.

In a sample test with 3 MiFis, we realized that getting a download at 70 kbps was hard even after using throttling tools which prevented other programs from using the data connection. At such a speed cap, loading pages in very difficult and streaming audio and video was impossible because buffering was a lot.

This means one either has to purchase a regular 4G bundle at uncapped speeds which is expensive or scout for another internet package like smile whose FUP cap is 512 kbps. Well, their policy states that they have a right to change it at any particular time leaves no defense to the consumer who wasn’t reliably informed.

Below are the terms and conditions Vodafone Uganda applies to the following plans, each of which offers unlimited data (the “Unlimited Plans”):

Product Download Speed* Validity FUP Cap Price (UGX)
Unlimited 2mbps/1 2mbps 24 hours 1.5GB 17,900
Unlimited 2mbps/7 2mbps 7 days 8GB 69,900
Unlimited 2mbps/30 2mbps 30 days 35GB 149,900
Unlimited 6mbps/30 6mbps 30 days 50GB 199,900
Unlimited 10mbps/30 10mbps 30 days 60GB 349,900
Unlimited Nite 2mbps 30 days 50GB 79,900
Day and Nite 2mbps 30 days 35GB 199,900
Day and Nite 2mbps 30 days 50GB 259,900

Netflix is now available in Uganda and 130 other countries

0

The popular streaming service Netflix which even has its’ own global trend ‘Netflix and chill’ is now available in Uganda. Netflix which was be only available in a few countries like the USA, UK, Australia and a few other is now available in Uganda without geo-restrictions.

We no longer need to hide behind pricey VPNs and virtual credit cards to access Netflix content. I guess Netflix realised many people in  various countries were doing so which led to a rather global launch. The website no longer shows the hated “Not available in your country” notice but it shows the shows that are available and pricing rates. Netflix can be accessed through the website (netflix.com) and mobile apps on Android, iOS and windows.

Netflix is pricing starts at $7.99 (about 28,000 Ugs) for the basic package, $9.99 and $11.99. I personally recommend the $10 package because it supports high definition playback and you get the ability to watch on 2 screens at a time.

Here is a table showing what each package comes with;

netflix

The prices are better than what you pay for price Pay-TV providers like DSTV but internet packages are very expensive or speeds are capped. The challenge is the Fair Usage Policies of unlimited internet providers are now bogas. Reports from Techjaja show that Netflix will consume up to a gigabyte after an hour of streaming.

You will also notice that coverage map of Netflix is no longer red only on the right. Since its now available almost everywhere except China, and North Korea for reasons based on censorship.

helloWorld

Well, it’s good to have Netflix we only wish ISPs could create internet packages that are suitable for streaming at a low rate.

Hey, Spotify…..what are you waiting for! Africa is giving some dollars to the fruit named company as it waits.
