MTN Uganda Reports 8.8% Revenue Growth in Half Year Results

0

MTN Group today released the interim results for the first half of 2018. The results point to improved revenues – up by 10.2% – for the MTN Group, with Uganda being a major contributor to that growth. According to the results, MTN Uganda’s revenue expanded by 8.8% to Ugx734.4bn on account of improved data revenue and Mobile Money revenue exceeding expectations.

Commenting on MTN Uganda’s performance, the CEO Wim Vanhelleputte struck an optimistic tone, saying, “MTN is well positioned to deliver growth in the sector despite the shake ups experienced in the market recently that were occasioned by the newly introduced Excise Duty tax regimes on OTT and Mobile Money especially. Our half year results notwithstanding, I see MTN ending the year on a good note.”

Growth in Mobile Money revenue exceeded expectations and the number of active Mobile Money customers on Uganda’s leading brand and network NPS operator increased to 5.3 million. Mobile Money subscribers made up more than half the total subscriber base of 10.5 million, which declined slightly by 1.8%. The decline was as a result of the recent introduction of guidelines for the sale and replacement of SIM cards by the regulator, Uganda Communications Commission, between March and May 2018. Nevertheless, the number of active data subscribers rose to 1.8 million, helping lift data revenue by 17.8%.

“MTN will continue to innovate and explore in the area of digital services and enhance our offering in Mobile Money to position it as the immediate solution to money transfer. Expect increased engagement with our customer care service to enhance the experience. We intend to communicate more on all the work we are doing especially in the communities as CSR to expand focus beyond our core mandate,” Wim Added.

MTN Uganda’s performance was highlighted by Rob Shuter, the MTN Group CEO during the release of the results in South Africa.

MTN had an encouraging first half of 2018, with an acceleration in the second quarter, supported by an improved operational performance across many markets. This was led by Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and Uganda. Service revenue growth increased by 10.2%, driven by robust voice revenue growth and the continued expansion of data and digital revenue. This in turn was supported by a 2,8% increase in subscriber numbers, continued network rollout, increasing 3G and 4G population coverage and improving customer service,” Shuter said.

He cited opportunities in the Sub-Saharan markets and Middle East with the existing demographics as a key driver, characterized by growing populations and the low internet and digital penetration as potential areas to tap in, all falling within MTN’s strategy and mandate.

Here is How To Make a Group Video Call on WhatsApp

0

WhatsApp supports free video calling over Wi-Fi or mobile data, even to persons living overseas. For the most time, we have been only conversant with the individual video calls and not very many people actually know that there is an option for group video calls on WhatsApp.

In the past people had to use a third-party app to make group video calls with their WhatsApp contacts, now however, the functionality is available within the app for iPhone and Android. If you can’t find it you must have to update your app.

Today, we shall take you through the very easy step of making a call to multiple contacts at once.
Needless to say, to make an individual call, you just need to open the WhatsApp conversation of the contact you want.
Tap the video camera at the top right of the window, the video call will automatically commence and the recipient’s phone will ring.

For the Group Video Call, here is how you should go about it.

1. Open a WhatsApp conversation.
2. Tap the video camera at the top right of the window. The video call will automatically commence and the recipient’s phone will ring.
3. Once your recipient has answered, tap the add user icon at the top right corner of the screen.
4. Select a second recipient to add them to the call.
5. Once they have joined you can also add a third recipient

Alternatively, if you would rather make standard voice calls rather than video calls just tap the telephone icon instead of the video camera icon.

Android 9 Officially Launched, Digital Wellbeing coming soon

0

Coming along with a heaping helping of artificial intelligence baked in to make your phone smarter, simpler and more tailored to you, the Android 9 Pie has been officially launched.
It is built to learn from you and work better for you, the more you use it.
From predicting your next task so you can jump right into the action you want to take, to prioritizing battery power for the apps you use most, to helping you disconnect from your phone at the end of the day, Android 9 adapts to your life and the ways you like to use your phone.

The development comes with features like Adaptive Battery, which learns the apps you use most and prioritizes battery for them, and Adaptive Brightness, which learns how you like to set the brightness in different settings, and does it for you.

Android 9 also helps you get things done faster with App Actions, which predicts what you’ll want to do next based on your context and displays that action right on your phone.
For instance, when you’re preparing for your commute: you’ll be suggested actions like navigating to work on Google Maps or resuming an audiobook with Google Play Books. And when you put in headphones after work, you may see options to call your mom or start your favorite Spotify playlist. As if that isn’t enough, Android also promises to roll out (later this year) Slices which shows relevant information from your favorite apps when you need it.

They acknowledge that making your phone smarter and more adaptive is important and therefore want Android to be easier to use and more approachable. Accordingly, that is why they have introduced a new system navigation featuring a single home button.
“This is especially helpful as phones grow taller and it’s more difficult to get things done on your phone with one hand. With a single, clean home button, you can swipe up to see a newly designed Overview, the spot where at a glance you have full-screen previews of your recently used apps” they said in a statement.

In the new update, the Smart Text Selection(which recognizes the meaning of the text you’re selecting and suggests relevant actions) now works on the Overview of your recent apps – making it easier to perform the action you want. You can enable this new system navigation in Settings once you’ve received your update to Android 9.
“Changing how you navigate your phone is a big deal, but small changes can make a big difference too. Android P also brings a redesigned Quick Settings, a better way to take and edit screenshots, simplified volume controls, an easier way to manage notifications and more. You’ll notice small changes like these across the platform, to help make the things you do all the time easier than ever.

In a research, Android claims that over 70% of the people wish they could disconnect more easily off their phones and free up time for other things.
“So we’ve been working to add key capabilities right into Android to help people achieve the balance with technology they’re looking for” they asserted.
At Google I/O in May, they previewed some of these digital wellbeing features for Android, including a new Dashboard that helps you understand how you’re spending time on your device; an App Timer that lets you set time limits on apps and grays out the icon on your home screen when the time is up; the new Do Not Disturb, which silences all the visual interruptions that pop up on your screen; and Wind Down, which switches on Night Light and Do Not Disturb and fades the screen to grayscale before bedtime.

Digital Wellbeing will officially launch on Pixel phones soon, with Android One and other devices coming later this year. But these features are available in beta now for Pixel phones running Android 9. To try them out:
1. Make sure you’re running Android 9 Pie on your device. (Learn how to check which version of Android you have.)

2. Sign up for the beta with the email address you use with Google Play.

3. Accept your invitation to become a beta tester by clicking the link in your welcome email.

4. Once you’ve accepted your invitation, Digital Wellbeing will appear in your phone’s Settings app. It may take up to 24 hours for Digital Wellbeing to appear on your device.

In addition to continuously hardening the platform, and an improved security model for biometrics, Android 9 enables industry-leading hardware security capabilities to allow protecting sensitive data like credit card information using a secure, dedicated chip.  Android 9 also brings important privacy improvements, such as TLS by default and DNS over TLS to help protect all web communications and keep them private.

Raxio Data Centre Set to establish state of the art Data Center in Namanve,Uganda

0

Raxio Data Centre Ltd (“Raxio”) is setting up Uganda’s first state-of-the-art data centre in the Namanve Industrial and Business Park.

Raxio was established earlier this year by the Roha, a US greenfield investment company that builds and and develops new businesses across Africa.

Raxio has also appointed James Byaruhanga as General Manager. James Byaruhanga is a Ugandan national, with m According to Robert Mullins, Director of Raxio, its data centre is the “country’s first Tier III, truly carrier-neutral co-location facility and is ideally located just outside Kampala’s CBD, a key requirement for disaster recovery and business continuity.”

James Byaruhanga

“When it opens in mid-2019, this centre will ensure the equipment housed within it operates optimally, 24/7, in a fully safe, secure and redundant environment. At full capacity, the centre will be able to house up to 400 racks, delivering 1.5MW of IT power,” he said. The data centre has been designed to global Tier III standards by Future-Tech, a UK specialist data-centre design company with over 30 years of experience.

Raxio has also appointed Symbion, a leading local architectural firm to carry out the civil and structural design of the building. Future-Tech and Symbion are working hand-in-hand to oversee the building and commissioning of the centre. Construction is set to start this quarter.

Commenting about the centre, James Byaruhanga said it is a timely investment in Uganda’s Knowledge and ICT sector with wide strategic national benefits that go beyond its primary function of serving as a disaster recovery facility for improved business continuity of financial institutions, enterprises and government MDAs.

More than 18 years of experience in the ICT industry as a manager in several leading telecom companies and internet service providers.

“We believe that with the growth in data usage and storage and the broader digital transformation of businesses and the public sector being witnessed in Uganda today, a Tier III data centre will be a key pillar to Uganda’s digital economy and will stimulate and support the growth and digitalisation of the Ugandan economy and thus help meet the goals set in the MoICT Data Strategy and the broader National Development Plans,” he said.

He added: “With this world-class facility, we shall attract major global content data networks, cloud services providers as well as regional carriers to Uganda. Other than bringing critical services closer to the local market, this will make internet services cheaper and faster to the end user, but most importantly, bring down the overall cost of connectivity in the country, thus increasing global competitiveness of Ugandan businesses.”

He also said the project would contribute significantly to job creation and tax revenue generation.

Data for Nothing: Fraudsters Use Fake Gift Cards to Lure Consumers into Handing Over Personal Data

0

Experts have discovered the distribution of an unusual fraudulent scheme that tricks users into parting with their time and their data, for no return. By creating fake websites for the free generation of gift cards, cybercriminals are able to “sell” users’ data to third-party partner sites, to which they redirect victims.

While industry and law enforcement agencies from around the world are busy fighting against cybercrime, criminals themselves are constantly looking for new ways of earning money – other than just malware. Offering something valuable free of charge is always an enticing piece of marketing, and criminals can take advantage of this. Websites that offer customers the option of freely generating gift cards for well-known companies – like iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, or Steam – are nothing new. For example, legitimate apps like Token file and Swagbucks buy card codes from vendors, to then give them to clients as a reward for certain activities. Criminals have apparently recognised the popularity of such websites and have decided to deceive users using a simple algorithm.

When on the fake site, the user is asked to select the gift card he/she wants in order to receive the code. After that, the fraudulent mechanism is set in motion. To get the generated code, however, the user needs to prove that he/she is not a robot. To do this, the user has to follow the suggested link and complete various tasks, the number and type of which are determined by the partner network to which the user is redirected. For example, he/she may be asked to fill in a form, leave a phone number or email address, subscribe to a paid SMS-message, install adware, and so on.

The result is predictable: either victims get tired of doing endless tasks, or they finally get the useless code. The earnings for criminals range from a few cents per every click on the desired link to several dozen dollars for filling in a form or subscribing to paid services. Thus, the criminals make a profit virtually for nothing, getting paid from the user’s actions on the websites of third-party partners, who, for their part, also benefit by getting access to personal data which can be used for private purposes.

“The success of these new fraud schemes is based on criminals exploiting the drive of users to get something for free. However, at best they will spend hours of personal time doing worthless tasks, and at worst – lose money without receiving anything in return. So, if you want to get your hands on a free gift card, try to earn it on legal and trustworthy sites,” said Lyubov Nikolenko, web content analyst, Kaspersky Lab.

To avoid falling for cybercriminals’ fraudulent schemes and losing personal data, Kaspersky Lab researchers suggest that users follow a few simple rules:

•Remember that there is no such thing as a free lunch and always treat offers that seem too tempting to be true with scepticism.
•Check the HTTPS connection and domain name when you open a webpage. This is especially important when you are using websites which contain sensitive data – such as sites for online banking, online shops, email, social media sites etc.
•Never share your sensitive data, such as logins and passwords, bank card data etc., with a third party. Official companies will never ask for data like this via email.
•Do not spread questionable links among your friends.
•Check with the company if it really is giving out gift codes, and whether the site is its official partner. To do this, contact the official support service by reaching out on the official website of the company.
• Use a reliable security solution with behaviour-based anti-phishing technologies to detect and block spam and phishing attacks, such as Kaspersky Total Security, which blocks fake gift card sites.

The X-Mobile Money App Review: A One-Stop App for mobile payments

It is no doubt that of the two taxes that the Ugandan cabinet passed recently, The Mobile Money tax of 1% (later reduced to 0.5%) is one that didn’t rub people the right way the most. Folks abandoned using Mobile Money, drastically, Numbers dropped and this caused a slum on the usage of mobile money platforms.

Scholars argued that this caused a big blow to the fintech innovation scene in Uganda and will give an epic blow anything that wants a Mobile Money Integration because of the tax. We can sit to debate about the tax and surely at the end of the day we shall still learn that the tax is unfair.

In the midst of the cloudy confusion, Dei Technologies, the makers of X Mobile Money App, a platform that seeks to serve a central exchange and service point for all Mobile MOney networks and other payments platforms. From the look of the app, it wants to break the Jinx that the tax has seemingly brought to effect.

I laboured to use the XMM app for about a week or so, sent and received money using the app, paid for Utility Bills, bought airtime all from my wallet on the app. However, it still didn’t address the main issue that I had, how do I bypass the MTN Mobile Money or Airtel Money because then if I wanted to withdraw money to cash, I’d have to add it to my MTN Mobile Money wallet to do so.

I spent an evening with the makers of this app trying to understand how it works, why Ugandans need to trust it as their option and life saver. We carried out a myriad of tests, I asked questions and in my review, I address them and I know you may have the same.

What is the X Mobile Money (XMM) App?

The X Mobile Money (XMM) is a new platform serving a central exchange and service point for all Mobile Money networks and other payment platforms. The App enables you to cross network purchases and money transactions. You can Send and receive Mobile Money from all Mobile Money networks.

With the recent ban on scratch cards, the XMM App allows you to carry out Airtime purchases and you can also buy Internet bundles MTN Bundles, Africell, Smart Telecom, Uganda Telecom, Smile Telecom, Roke Telecom and Tangerine.

Furthermore, you can pay your Utility Bills payments such as Umeme, NWSC, GOTv, StarTimes, Zuku and DSTv.

How to use the X Mobile Money App

The XMM App comes in easy to see fonts and flaunts a green and pale blue colours. If you must use it, you obviously need to download it on your Play Store or the Apple Store on your phone.

To Deposit, when you Open the Application and you’ll click on your wallet amount/ Balance. You will be redirected to the deposit screen. Specify how much you want to deposit in the Amount field Your registered XMM number is the default number you can deposit from. You can also deposit from any other number as long as it is registered on mobile money and it has enough funds to allow the deposit.

Once the information of the amount and number has been filled in, click next and wait for the pop up from your network which requires your mobile money pin to confirm the deposit to your XMM wallet.

The set up is pretty much easy and precise and doesn’t require as much information. Once a deposit fails to go through, XMM Deposit system being an instant it is most likely a network error from the Telecom operator and once you try about a few times, this is often rectified. An XMM user can send money from their wallet to another XMM user’s wallet at zero rates in an instant.

To send money as XMM money,

  1. Specify the amount
  2. Specify the receiver’s number
  3. Specify the reason.
  4. Click send money as XMM

Once is done, you can Withdraw from XMM App by sending it to your ordinary Mobile money account at a very small fee then withdraw normally with an agent. Because not so many agents have been rolled out, you still have to face the same old Airtel or MTN Mobile Money agents. However, the XMM agents will be available in all parts soon, something that the makers of this app are promising.

You’ve lost hope right?

Hold Up, there’s still some.

Using the XMM App, you can still by-pass the imposed taxes on the sending stage only if the receiver is also registered on XMM App. For you to bypass the tax, the person you want to send the money to should also have the app.  However, after the introduction of XMM Agents, users will be able to bypass taxes at all stages.

Is it Secure giving XXM Your Money?

When I tweeted about the App, many directed their questions to the sensitive issue of how secure their money is. I shared the same sentiment. I wondered what if they woke up one morning and closed shop with all our float (money) on their system. Would we ever find them? Who regulates them anyway?

Firstly, XMM is sub-regulated by UCC and Bank of Uganda under different payment aggregators and they affirm that Your money is 100% safe with XMM. The Application is developed by a reputable team from Dei Technologies Inc and insured under many insurance providers. XMM does not store any personal data besides the Phone Number and Account Name.
