NITA & ILICIT Africa are hosting a Geo Tools for Monitoring and Evaluation Training Workshop

0

ILICIT Africa which is an organisation that aims at enhancement of livelihoods using ICT tools, and NITA Uganda are organizing a training workshop in Monitoring and Evaluation using Geo Tools.

The training will mainly cover data collection using mobile technology, analysis and publication to google maps. The training will be based on ODK (Open Data Kit), Fusion Tables and Google Earth. The training is a hands on training which will enhance the participants skills in geo tools for monitoring and evaluation.

I asked Daniel Nanghaka who is the event co-ordinator why it is important for one to attend the training and he heard this to say;

“Every day that passes by there is need to digitize and gather real time data, during monitoring and evaluation. With the projects that span through multiple locations and high population geo tools becoming the necessity to geo tag data and analyse data in respective to the region or respective location which justifies the importance of the training.”

The training is targeting 25 participants who will gain a hands on experience and will be able to use the respective tools. To confirm your participation, you will be required to make a contribution of UGX 30,000/- (Thirty Thousand Shillings only) which will be used for meals and at the end of the day a certificate of Participation will be awarded to all participants.

Oppo claims it’s Super VOOC tech will charge a phone in 15 minutes

0

Many people love fast charging, unfortunately we can’t say many people love Oppo phones. However Oppo has a trick up it’s sleeve. Oppo has announced an new quick-charging technology called SuperVOOC that will enable phone users charge their phones within 15 minutes. The smartphone company shared that it’ll take 15 minutes to charge a blacked-out 2,500mAh battery to 100%. SuperVOOC technology will work over traditional MicroUSB and USB Type-C cables.

An Oppo hypeman plugged a metal-encased reference device into a charger and continued his spiel in Mandarin. Less than ten minutes later — after he discussed an algorithm that varies current to maximize charging efficiency while keeping temperatures low — the phone was back up to 100 percent. Our natural skeptics can’t help suspect this was just a staged demo for the show, so here’s hoping we get to test a SuperVOOC phone ourselves soo.

This news is much more exciting than the demos by Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 3.0 demos. If this technology actually works in normal real life scenarios then the not so popular phone company, Oppo might acqure a good number of customers.

All Hail the new Samsung Galaxy S7

0

The prophesy was fulfiled that the bad boys of Samsung will be unveiling a block buster flaship around this time.  Well, about this time yesterday… A new flagahip was added to the Samsung family line and boy oh boy is it out of this planet.

image

Samsung wasnt ready to let LG and it LG5 take all the spot light. Hence, the unveiling of yet another perfectly designed Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge down at MWC at an Unpacked Event in Barcelona. These guys unveiled a new VR known as the Gear 360. Mark Zuckerberg also was there at the event.
When Samsung launched the Galaxy S6, truth is that we poured it with praise. Both the Galaxy S6 and S6 we clearly designed on point and Samsung had never taken this road of design philosophy before. Clearly one was more popular than the other but damn was it worth it.

This year wasn’t all about reinventing these foemula but only refining them. The results were the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. We learnt that the South Korean company had renewed its agreement with Microsoft to preload the firm’s productivity suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive and Skype) on both devices.

image

There are another Software alteration that have been made to the phones. This one’s a little peculiar, though. The manufacturer has removed both its stock Music and Video Player applications from the units and, instead, replaced them with Google Play Music and Google Play Movies. In case these dont appeal to you, you can always get Samsung native media apps from the Galaxy Store.

The specs
Samsung has stepped back from the megapixel race and opted for a 12-megapixel camera that has bigger pixels, better autofocus and a larger aperture for an improved imaging experience, especially in low-light conditions. This sensor is put together by the boys over at Sony. It is precisely a Sony IMX260 sensor. There has been an improvement in the camera design, thanks to the camera protrusion being less than half a millimetre (0.46mm to be exact). The device features the world’s first Dual Pixel sensor on a smartphone, that will allow for better and faster autofocus, as it uses all the pixels in the camera for focussing on the subject, instead of only using 0.78% of the pixels like on last year’s Galaxy S6 device range.
Each pixel is now 1.4 micron and the sensor aperture is F1.7. The front camera is a 5-megapixel sensor with F1.7 as well.
A new feature in the Camera app is the ability to do instant sharing. If you enable this option, after taking a photo, a preview of the image will come sliding onto your screen, enabling you to share it right away or delete it if you dislike it. It’s somewhat similar to LG’s camera app, which shows a preview of your selfies if you bring the device close to your face after taking a photo.

image

Samsung might not be rocking its own camera sensor, but certainly seems to have developed a custom audio chip for its new Galaxies. This is a “Lucky CS47L91 Sound chip”. The audio chip should be comparable to the one used in LG’s flagship devices.

The design of the Samsung Galaxy S7 comes with a curved back which is identical to the Note 5. With this move, Samsung has given appropriate attention to one of the main usability issues of Galaxy S6 edge and S6 edge+  which are the sharp edges where the Edge screen ends. Combined with the rounded edges and the use of 3D glass (produced using Samsung’s 3D Thermal Forming technique), the Galaxy S7 devices are a pure pleasure to hold in the  hand. Without compromising design, Samsung has also increased utility by adding back IP68 water and dust resistance similar to the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S Active lineup, but in a rather sleek and fashionable way. The devices still feature a non-removable battery and no IR blaster.

Similar to last year, Samsung is using a 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED in the regular Galaxy S7. The big change, however, is to be found in the Galaxy S7 edge. This device now features a 5.5-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED screen, while last year’s S6 edge also had a 5.1-inch screen size (and later on, its bigger brother, the S6 edge+, came out with a 5.7-inch screen). Like all of Samsung’s Super AMOLED displays, this one has vivid colors and great viewing angles, and it’s an amazing display piece overall.

image

In the User interface and Software department, both the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are based on Android 6.0.1 with a security patch of February 2016. Both devices have the same interface as Samsung’s latest beta/official Android Marshmallow update for the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge. The software includes new Edge panels and an overall new interface.
New in Samsung’s interface is the Always On display. When your display is off, you are able to see the clock or calendar combined with notifications. Theme designers will be able to theme the Always On Display as well. Samsung, however, told us they won’t bring the Always On display to current devices which makes the S7 and S7 edge more unique. The Always On display’s content moves around every few seconds, to make sure the screen won’t burn in. Also, if you put your device in a pouch or your pocket, it will detect this and turn the screen off completely after one minute.
Samsung has added its own Game Launcher and Game Tools apps (for example, to record, pause or screenshot your game). They also enable players to have a longer playtime by offering a Downscale option to downscale performance in games, thus keeping your device cool and making the battery last longer.

The consumer favorite feature, expandable storage via a microSD card slot, has returned! The removal of the microSD card slot in the Galaxy S6 device range was probably the biggest problem with last year’s Galaxy flagships. We are very happy that Samsung decided to add back the microSD card slot to the S7 and S7 edge. The microSD card slot supports cards up to 200 GB. By default, the Galaxy S7 devices will feature either 32GB or 64GB internal storage, depending on which version you are able to buy in your country.

image

One major issues with smartphones nowadays is that the battery doesn’t last long enough, sometimes hardly a single day. Fortunately, Samsung has come up with a solution for this in the Galaxy S7 duo. Whereas last year’s Galaxy S6 was sporting a 2,550 mAh battery, the Galaxy S7 will be released with a 3,000 mAh battery. This means you should be able to at least get one day of battery life without breaking a sweat. The Galaxy S7 edge will have an even larger battery; it will be 3,600 mAh, which in turn is even more than last year’s Galaxy S6 edge+. This will obviously make the devices a little bit thicker and heavier, but we personally think this is worth the trade-off.

Conclusion
Samsung has managed to improve a lot of the shortcomings from the Galaxy S6 lineup and has worked towards making the devices close to perfect flagships. The return of the microSD slot, improved ergonomics, the water resistance, and other top-of-the-line hardware should be among the key reasons that drive the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge to the success we think they deserve.

image

One disadvantage is that the glass on these devices is still a fingerprint magnet given its glossy nature, and the increased screen size on the Galaxy S7 edge might be a let-down for many, especially those who were wishing to upgrade from their Galaxy S6 edge to a similarly sized successor.

The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge will be available globally starting mid-March, and we are pretty excited about the two devices. Samsung has truly managed to create wonderful smartphones and we can’t wait to get our hands on them for a full review.

Hellofood is now the most credible source for restaurant, food and cuisine Information in Uganda

0

Hellofood Uganda has all calibers of restaurants on its portal, hence giving it access to all relevant, reliable and current food and cuisine information in the country, information such as current trends of food culture, desired cuisines and food recipes.

Hellofood is currently the leading and largest online food delivery marketplace in Uganda, which offers a platform for the people that make food to sell to those that want to eat and buy the food, a convenient, secure and easy-to-use platform to find or list restaurants/food online. Hellofood is also able to offer the most comprehensive picture of the food market in Uganda. The portal looks to have both the food or restaurant enthusiast and the aspirational viewer that looks to invest in restaurant and food industry in Uganda.

Ron Kawamara, Managing Director of Hellofood Uganda, said; “Hellofood is glad to be a credible source for all restaurant and food related information in the market, because that is one of the company’s core values. As the portal offers a one stop place for all that is food related, with all aspects on offer in the market, such all the global cuisines present in the market, access to the many chefs that prepare the meals and all players in the hospitality and food industry in the country.”

He added that Hellofood already has a global presence through hellofood/Foodpanda global, thus making it have the capability to blend all information from the global perspective and then incorporate it into the Uganda market trends. Therefore hellofood keeps accumulating the relevant data any stakeholder would require to make an informed and right decision in terms of food industry, such as what cuisines are most popular, where to start a restaurant, how to serve customers better and this was exhibited through the Kampala Restaurant Awards (KRA) that were hosted by Hellofood and its partners.

“Therefore the company plans to continue providing all the necessary information to all stakeholders, so as to help them make the best decisions on any matters regarding to food in Uganda,” Kawamara said.

Do you know what a VPN is?

0

Following the Uganda Communications Commision and Electoral Commision conniving to deny us Social media access and the right to communicate, there has been something Trending in this steamy season of elections. Today we focus on what a VPN is and how you can harness its glorious power.

image

To start off, VPN as you have noticed is a short form which stands for Virtual Private Network. Basing on the full format of the acronym, we see the word Virtual and from our lessons of light in physics, we do remember that this means exactly the same, opposite but not real. From that, it makes a VPN simply a Reflection of an APN. APNs are Access Point Networks that we have commonly thought of as Internet settings or configurations for long. A VPN is a secure and encrypted tunnel that allows one to access websites or applications anonymously and appear to be anywhere of his choosing.
That said, it’s really uncommon to find a regular Ugandan that has used VPNs before apart from Ugandan students is China. This can be testified by the number of people who are to date still in Social Media darkness and haven’t figured out how to hook up themselves with any of the free VPN support apps that are flooding the market.

How does it work?
UCC was able to block people access because all APNs of ISPs in Uganda are registered with them.  Now this is where the magic comes in.  The thing with VPNs is that they relay disguised Data from remote Servers to respond to requests from client devices. Meaning, the UCC’s firewall does not notice the traffic coming in and leaving which is being queried by VPN configured devices. Thus, the reason as to why many Ugandans are able to bypass this firewall. Reports have put it that over a million Ugandans have downloaded a specific VPN app and more downloads are trickling in.
Ugandans in China or other Chinese use VPNs because they have restricted Facebook access as well. I am guessing this trick originated from there. Essentially, VPNs were meant to enable employees to securely access office intranets when they are traveling outside the company premises.

image

Can the UCC track VPN users?
Certainly… Or not. VPN traffic to some extent is un traceable but other means could be used with a varying contingency of success. Am entirely basing on a notion that their IT staff was hired for such breaches.

Guru8.net appeals to however finds this info useful, to be very mindful and consume it with extreme prejudice and discretion while accounting for the laws in Uganda. Apparently, using VPNs currently is an act of treason so better watch your back. Till next time, keep peaceful.

Social Media blocked in Uganda! Bypassing is easy though

0

The Uganda Communications commission (UCC) ordered Internet service providers to block popular the social media services of Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter in Uganda. The UCC which regulates communication providers in Uganda also ordered telecoms to block access to Mobile money. However the block started before any official announcement was made by telecoms. It was at around midday yesterday when the UCC issued an official statement.

The UCC gave a mediocre agrument that they had been blocked due to security reason and President Museveni says they blocked social media to stop the spread of propaganda and lies during the election period. The UCC boss said Mobile money was blocked because they received reports that it would aide the election malpractice activities like rigging.

Social media users in Uganda aren’t happy with the blockage and resorted to simple methods of bypassing the block. One can access their social media accounts by simply downloading a VPN app like TunnelBear, hotspot shield, SuperVPN etc or configure a proxy in order to access the internet.
Unfortunately, Mobile money which happens to be the commonest and most instant and efficient money transfer service is blocked and their is no way around it.

Much as the President was quoted to say that the ban is temporary, the ban will only be removed when the UCC, Electoral commission and Security Forces find that the situation has stabilized enough for the threat to be minimal. This means their is no official date when the block will be removed.

The UCC has issued a statement saying that it has realized that many people are using security apps to bypass the blockage. The regulatory authority claims that it track down and charge those using these apps with Treason.

Instagram adds two factor authentication for improved security

0

If you want to not be hacked, the absolute best thing you can do is turn on two-factor authentication for all your accounts. Instagram is way behind the trend here, but it looks like tween’s second-favorite photo network is finally getting with the times.

Instagram is in the process of rolling out two-factor authentication. It will work like everyone else’s two-factor system: log in from a new device, and you’ll get a passcode texted to you. This is better than the printed-out codes Snapchat was previously experimenting with, but not as slick as something like Google’s Authenticator app.

Instagram’s new stepped up security comes shortly after it started allowing multiple accounts — another long-requested feature. Users started seeing the update earlier this month, which allows people to switch between accounts without going through the hassle of logging out and in repeatedly.
