Google rolls out a snooze feature to the Gmail app

0

After rolling out a new version of Gmail, Google added a snooze function has been carried over to the web and is now making its way to the Gmail app on Android.

Snooze for Gmail works just like it does with Inbox. Simply tap snooze (in the overflow menu) when viewing an email, and you can pick a time for the email to ping your inbox again. It’s a way to remind yourself to deal with the email in question. Gmail has the same UI as Inbox with suggested snooze durations as well as the option to set a custom snooze.

If you have snooze available on mobile, it won’t have its own icon in the top bar the way it did in Inbox. Instead, you can access snooze by tapping the overflow icon in the top right corner when viewing an email.

Once snooze is selected, you can choose when you’d like the email to pop up at the top of your inbox, with options like “later today,” “tomorrow,” and “this weekend.” You can also choose a custom time and date if you wish. When using the new Gmail on web, snooze now appears in a hover menu over each message along with other actions like archive, delete, and mark as read.

EXCLUSIVE: UCC directs ISPs to ‘switch off’ Unauthorized Online News Sites

0

Early last month, Uganda Communication Commission on March 6th, 2018 published a notice signed by Engineer Godfrey Mutabazi, the Executive Director UCC, that online data communication platforms required “authorisation” from the commission and tasked all of them to apply for authorization before the end of April.

UCC emphasized that any content, whether by way of audio, video, visual, sound, still or moving pictures or a combination was a form of communication service that is subject to the regulatory control of the Commission.

In that regard, UCC asked every electronic Media news provider to apply and obtain authorization from the commission. In a leaked email dated April 19th, 2017, It was learnt that of the many e-media news outlets, only 14 had applied for the licences with only Nile Post Uganda Ltd and China Haijiang Online Africa Ltd had been fully authorised while the other 12 had their applications being processed.

An excerpt of the letter stated;

This is to confirm that the following providers have applied for and the commision is considering their applications for authorisation to provide Online Data Communications Services in Uganda;

S/N Name of Service Provider Status
1 Nile Post News Uganda Ltd Authorised
2 China Haijiang Online Africa Ltd Authorised
3 Dimension Media Ltd Application in process
4 Post Media Ltd Application in process
5 Uganda Online Website Directory Application in process
6 Hive Digital Ltd Application in process
7 Mirror Digital Ltd Application in process
8 Trumpet Media Ltd Application in process
9 Newslex Point Ltd Application in process
10 Gold Cast (U) Ltd Application in process
11 Newscorn Uganda Ltd Application in process
12 Hot Spot Ltd Application in process
13 Chimp Media Ltd Application in process
14 Guide 2 Uganda Application in process

In the wake of last week, UCC sent out a communication to all Internet service providers (ISPs) directing them to suspend the provision of carriage services to any Online Data communication service provider online/Electronic Media News provider) that is not listed above and/or had not presented an authorization certificate or other express clearance from the Uganda Communications Commission.

Apparently, the letter brings to book that every company that shall not have a license shall be switched off by UCC with the help of Internet Service providers who are the telecoms in this case.

SOO App Review: Ugandan e-commerce can be a Promising trek

When the Ugandan government proposed a social media tax come July 2018, one of the reasons highlighted was that it was to promote online platforms that have been developed by Ugandans. We could not agree more that Ugandan technological talent has to be showcased out there and in the spirit of promoting Ugandan creatives, we introduce the SOO (Sigma Omega Omega) app.

Developed by Candia Alex and Mawa Fred, the app is meant to help users find and offer products and services easily. It comes with bug fixes and maps to give location access to the trader. In its latest version, 1.0.8, the SoO app comes with a mini-google maps feature that provides a directory to the nearest church, embassy or even kafunda to a user.

The Sigma Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. app was created to help build a closer-knit community among members: you can join conversations, share photos, learn about events, and find contact info for all members.

What gives SOO an edge over similar platforms like OLX and JUMIA UG, is the fact that in addition to products, a range of services such as legal, engineering and construction to mention but a few can be traded. The app gives the user the choice to trade as an individual or company and to reach a service provider by phone, email or even location. SOO is easy to use and navigate with all the important features on the same page yet not congested.

If you have services to offer, this is the app for you. Under the gigs tab is an array of services needed by other users where one can land themselves a juicy gig. The application process is not as complicated as Freelancer’s or Up-Work’s, I must add. Following the recent Facebook scandal, a lot of users are worried about data privacy which SoO guarantees.

A missing feature that would make the app better is an embedded pay system, like Freelancer, uses PayPal. With that, a user will not have to worry about bulky cash transactions or go through the bother of transferring funds between mobile money and bank accounts. The future is cashless, no?

SoO comes free of charge for the Android user, we are yet to receive an update on SoO for iOS or whether the app will come at a cost in the future. The app definitely has a future on the Ugandan tech scene but for now, I’d give it app a 5/10. If you are for Buy Uganda Build Uganda, I’d advise you to add this app to your collection.

The Huawei P20 Pro is redefining phone photography

0

For many, the first feature they would look out on a phone is a camera right after storage capacity. I’m speaking pixel size, camera aperture and image stabilization. Now since the Huawei P8, Huawei Technologies has not disappointed its users with its camera specs. The Huawei P9 was one of the first cameras ever made with a dual camera system. With every phone, comes a better camera and now, Huawei might as well redefine the history of phone photography with its latest invention.

Meet the Huawei P20 Pro, expected to be released this April with all the phone specs you would kill for. History is being made with the first ever triple camera on a phone coming with this batch. Huawei is no-doubt snatching the phone camera championships from Apple and Samsung’s hands with this one.

The Huawei P20 Pro features the world’s first Leica Triple Camera promising 3x optical zoom, phase detection, LED flash and laser autofocus. The primary triple camera system is a collection of a 40MP RGB, 20MP monochrome and 8MP telephoto lens offering an unparalleled advanced camera system with artistic vision. Imagine all your desired sharpness, color accuracy, focus and contrast in one phone! And that is just the primary camera. The secondary camera on its own is a 24MP lens guaranteeing stunning selfies by day or night.

More than ever, low-light performance for any smartphone camera is a desired feature and nothing was left to chance with the Huawei P20 Pro. The camera boasts of a Night-Mode feature where the camera shutter will open for up to six seconds to take clear and sharp multiple shots in low-light. Not forgetting the 5X Hybrid Zoom that the camera is set to achieve along with geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, panorama and HDR features. Forget struggling to capture moving actions, with its AI image stabilization, the phone promises instant blur-free capturing of fleeting moments.

There is so much to anticipate about a phone with four cameras and we could go on and on, but this is the part where you agree that this could be the greatest phone camera 2018 will see. Intelligent phone photography just got redefined

It has not yet been noted up to when the offer will be running but what is for sure is that Gaga Wednesdays is back and might be here for quite a while.

SafeBoda starts expanding to Kenya, advertises Jobs

0

With a seemingly registered success in Uganda, SafeBoda, the Boda-Boda hailing app is now seeking to expand its business frontiers to Kenya to tap on the greater east African market. The orange camp of boda-boda services in seeking to enter the Kenyan Market and has already started advertising Jobs in Kenya.

In December last year, an article was published by Digest Africa about the possibility of their expansion to Kenya and they reported that “In a quick conversation with Maxime Dieudonne, SafeBoda’s co-founder and co-CEO, at Swarm, he declined to give a full interview about the expansion. However, he confirmed that it is true.”

In the wake of this week, it seems the speculations are coming to reality as SafeBoda, a community of motorcycle taxi (boda-boda) drivers, is finally entering the Kenyan Market. The ride-hailing startup, founded in 2015, has put out Job adverts on Fuzu, a Kenyan based job-seeking, recruitment and learning portal looking to hire.

SafeBoda has not yet issued any formal statement on the expansion but is believed to be doing underground recruitments as source intimate to this website that a lot is being done with penetrating the Kenyan Market. Their aim is to improve the industry for both drivers and passengers by increasing the number of safe trips taken per day and by making travel around cities convenient and stress-free.

COMMENTARY: Taxing Social Media Platforms in Uganda; What could go wrong?

0

It’s with a deep concern for the future of the Internet in Uganda that I write this. I have been following these discussions closely but to suggest taxing Social Media platforms in this current Uganda is simply ridiculous. Social Media Platforms have provided and continue to provide the fastest avenue for business communication especially in the marketing department and taxation of such can create a chain of events that can lead to loss of revenue from the different stakeholders.

Lack of direct Government Support for Local Innovators
Technology, to the consumer, presents itself as a platform for accelerating innovations in any sector and this creates a “can-do-it-by-magic” effect. The writer’s expectation of the Internet Society of Uganda in being innovative is valid, however, we all know that this innovation cant happens without crucial partners, and by partners I mean those who actually act on the policies set out. Sadly, many government policies on ICT are either not implemented, mainly due to red-tape and those that are implemented are set out to “organise” the ICT sector, which in the short run hurts ICT businesses in Uganda.

About 90% of ICT firms in Uganda are not certified, making it difficult for them to get the government contracts given out to ICT firms from other countries. Much as I understand the necessary documentation to get certified and I respect the process, you can agree with me that there is less interest in government paying the high cost in the short run through awarding contracts to local ICT Firms and thus ensuring a future where more Ugandans are employed thus directly contributing to increasing the tax base, which is the objective at this time.

ICT as a Tax Base Widening Tool
To directly answer the query of the writer, the solution to widening the tax base is not taxing Social Media platforms simply because many Ugandans use them. I strongly believe, and I know that we have capable local ICT firms that can take on the task of creating tools for a government that can help them reduce costs in their operations through Automation and Compliance. The main reason as to why this is not the case is simply due to the subsistence mindset, i.e. the “Who-Do-You-Know” kind of thinking, where projects are awarded on that basis after a money exchange and not on merit.

ICT can and is playing a big role in widening the tax base. We all know that many institutions, ranging from Bank of Uganda to URA, to Police are all embracing ICT to increase efficiency through automation and ensure compliance through an interface with computer systems which can be corrupted by human language and instincts. Bank of Uganda has introduced an Automated Clearing House (ACH) and so cheques shall be processed faster, URA has upgraded their taxation system to favour faster clearance at the border, Police is testing biometric authentication for driving permits to eradicate forgery and reduce the time it takes for someone to verify that they are eligible drivers.  So taxing the medium through with small and medium enterprises market themselves without signing “billboard” money is like killing the mother goose that lays golden eggs. Its just simply wrong since many local ICT firms are not given a chance by their own government to create tools that impact the nations, instead, many of the tools mentioned above are imported from India, SouthAfrica and China.

Way Forward

It’s not enough to discuss the taxation of Social Media platforms and not give solutions.

The government should give more ICT contracts to local firms on merit so as to secure a future of increased employment since these local ICT firms shall employ more of Ugandans. This shall easily translate into a wider tax base.

  • The government should appoint tested and proven key ICT players to aid in policy-making and followup. The best suggestion would be to partner with local Tech Hubs like OutBox, Innovation Village and Hive Colab. These guys are serious about what they do and the results are there to show it. This shall reduce on red-tape and further help on nurturing local ICT firms for government contracts and thus easily be following them up with their taxation. This also accelerates innovation and gives hope to ICT firms in the country so as to avoid the dependency syndrome i.e. Firms competing for external funding.
  • An Online Portal for Open Source Government tools is also key in ensuring that Government stops spending too much on external firms and depend on these locally provided tools by local ICT firms. This shall attract support fees where the ICT firms that made these tools benefit directly from the government and thus increasing jobs, sustainability and the tax base.
I strongly believe that introducing this kind of taxation shall cause reduced revenues for telecoms since these tools shall be abandoned for other avenues of communication. The loading of WTF bundles shall greatly reduce and I don’t think telecom companies shall be happy about that. It shall also create an opportunity for alternative tools to be made and adopted which might lead to interesting outcomes, both positive and negative.

Outbox Hub partners with Moringa School in Kenya to build the next generation of world-class developers

0

Since its founding in 2012, Outbox has been at the forefront of developing the technology entrepreneurship ecosystem in Uganda. Through its partners and programmes, it has provided access to seed funding, business training, mentorship & technical guidance to enable multiple startups to succeed. It is through this work that Outbox noticed the severe shortage of industry relevant software development skills in the country not only for the startups in their community but also the various organisations both for-profit and nonprofit.

Outbox, in collaboration with Kenya, based Moringa School – launched today the first in a series of coding boot camps focused on imparting industry relevant software engineering skills to young people. A coding boot camp is a short and intensive technical training program that teaches programming skills that employers look for, in an immersive environment.

The initiative, dubbed Outbox EDU, will see Outbox offer Moringa School’s technology training course through a five-week full-time computer science fundamentals course known as “Moringa Prep,” in June 2018.  Moringa Prep covers the foundational concepts of all high-level programming languages. Applications are now open and are here

Founded in 2014, Moringa School is a learning accelerator that provides its students with both digital and professional skills training. It is an intensive tech education program based in Nairobi, Kenya. The school has been successful in Kenya, Ghana, Pakistan and Hong Kong.  In 2018 alone, it received over 1100 applicants and taught 500+ students. Moringa School has a 95% job placement rate, and its graduates receive a 350% salary increase after leaving the program.

Through the partnership, Outbox will tap into Moringa’s experience in developing and delivering industry relevant technology education. It will also tap into its 40+ hiring partners all over the African continent to ensure that Outbox EDU graduates receive employment opportunities after graduation.

“With this partnership, our young people will be able to tap into world-class learning & employment opportunities, thus improving the quality of our offering to potential software engineers in Uganda,” said Richard Zulu, CEO at Outbox. “Our collaboration with Moringa School goes a long way in supporting our mission to grow inclusive communities that foster talent where we operate. We are very excited to be working with them in Uganda and tapping into a Pan-African network.”

Besides the technical skills, Moringa’s blended learning approach will allow for Outbox EDU participants to receive soft skills that also prepare them for the job or entrepreneurship market, supporting their transition to the labour market.

Moringa Prep will be offered to individuals with limited or no experience in software engineering. All one needs is to have the passion, be computer literate, and have considerations of pursuing a career in technology.

“We are excited to launch in Kampala, Uganda with an incredible partner like Outbox Hub,” says Audrey Cheng, Co-Founder and CEO of Moringa School. “This partnership will ensure we continue to provide access to our quality education programs to more individuals in other parts of the continent.”

The Moringa Prep initiative under Outbox EDU will run from June 2018 to July 2018. It will select up-to 35 participants for five weeks of intensive training, with a focus on both technical skills and soft skills. Through the partnership with Moringa School, Outbox seeks to train up-to 200 software developers each year.
