Google introduces YouTube Music, Spotify and Apple Music’s competitor

0

YouTube Music, Google’s most direct competitor to Spotify and Apple Music is coming with “a reimagined mobile app” and a new desktop player, both of them designed specifically for music. Music discovery is literally front and centre in the new YouTube Music, with the app’s home screen dynamically recommending new listening based on your history, location, and activity.

YouTube will combine all the official versions of songs with access to “thousands” of related playlists, remixes, covers, live versions, and of course, music videos. Google’s AI mastery is also being integrated into YouTube Music, with the promise that the app will discover songs either by lyrics or just a general description like “that hipster song with the whistling.”

With YouTube Music, listeners can access high-quality Art Tracks of your music (delivered by CD Baby), as well as videos you’ve uploaded to your own channel and any videos your fans have created using your music. For YouTube Red subscribers, this content is accessible ad-free and can be played while offline. For all other YouTube Music users, videos and music tracks are ad-supported. As an artist, CD Baby’s partnership with YouTube Music does NOT prevent you from uploading the same songs to your own YouTube channel. We’re simply making sure that YouTube Music users can hear your whole catalogue of music in high-quality audio.

YouTube Music will be a direct match to all the major music-streaming platforms already available, costing $9.99 for the premium version, which adds background listening, downloads, and an ad-free experience to the free option. Anyone who already has a Google Play Music subscription gets YouTube Music as part of that membership. Play Music isn’t going away yet, though it’s hard to see what future purpose there will be to Google sustaining two services and apps that overlap to quite such a degree.

The $11.99 YouTube Premium gets you everything inside YouTube Music plus access to the YouTube Originals library of video content. Google promises it’ll expand the Originals selection with “more, bigger original series and movies,” including comedies, dramas, reality series, and action adventure shows from the UK, Germany, France, Mexico, and other countries. With YouTube Premium, you’ll be free of ads, able to play videos in the background or download them for offline playback.

YouTube Music starts rolling out on Tuesday, May 22nd, to the existing YouTube Red markets, with the small addendum that in South Korea Google will only be offering a $9.99 YouTube Premium service. The other countries named will also get YouTube Music “in the coming weeks.”

Safaricom is reportedly entering the Ugandan Market

0

Kenyan Mobile operator giant Safaricom is reportedly set to enter the Ugandan and it’s alleged that it shall do so through the AFRINET card.

Recently, the Daily Monitor reported that competent investors were being sourced to take over the troubled Uganda Telecom company and further reported that government has up to May 26th to find a suitable investor.

Noticeably, AFRINET which is allegedly Safaricom’s proxy handed in a bid to buy Uganda Telecom. According to their website, Afrinet Telecom Limited is a Kenyan based technology company that offers a variety of services with their main being Internet services and one of their partners is Safaricom.

Last year, Safaricom’s CEO Bob Collymore revealed that the Kenyan based phone operator, is planning cross-border expansion for the first time, into the untapped market for ecommerce and mobile payments.

Mr Collymore said Safaricom, would initially target its east African neighbours, but is also considering west Africa. They’ve not come out to affirm the allegations of their planned entry to the Ugandan market but have it mind according to their CEO.

The company’s market capitalisation reached $10.5bn on August 29 2017 after its share price hit an all-time high of Ks27.25 but this has slipped by 9 per cent in the stock market sell-off after the supreme court nullified the result of last month’s presidential election.

It should also be noted that this is not the only way Safaricom is trying to enter Uganda as reports indicate that Little Cab, the Telecom’s flagship car hailing service is set to launch in Uganda soon.

Troubled telecommunications company Uganda Telecom has been on the table of controversies and struggles with rumors of a sale out and the pulling out of majority shareholders. These events, twists and turns have continued to put the state-owned telecom company in jeopardy.

The Ugandan Cabinet announced that it was in preparations of finding a capable investor to revive the State-owned Uganda Telecom (UTL) to upgrade its network and as well revamp its long lost glory.

The decisions comes in after details emerged that the company is choking on debts which reporeadly include UGX22.244 billion with government regulatory body of the communications sector; Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) arising from unpaid spectrum fees, UGX8 billion in interconnection fees to MTN, UGX58.424 billion in accumulated tax to government revenue collection agency, the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) for the period between May 2015 – December 2015.

This was due to the fact that Libyan Post Telecommunications and IT Holding Company (LPTIC) the highest shareholders with 62% shares pulled out leaving the firm in a cramble.

Among other companies interested in taking over Uganda Telecom include Mauritius Telecom, Hamilton Telecom who have been front runners, Telecel Global, Baylis Consortium and Teleology.

UCC threatens to suspend Africell Uganda’s license

0

Uganda Communications Commissions (herein referred to as Commission or UCU), has threatened to suspend the license of the telecom giant for breach of some of the regulations that were issued by the Commission and the terms of its license agreement and the law.

In a letter dated 17th May 2018, addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of Africell Uganda Limited, The Executive Director of the Commission, Godfrey Mutabazi, in a letter titled “Notice to show cause why Africell Uganda LTD PIP and PSP license should not be suspended for breach of directive against selling sim cards in ungazetted places”, threatens that the commission will be suspending the license of Africell Uganda within 60 days unless the company shows reasons why it should not be suspended.

Africell, in the letter, has been faulted for not adhering to the directives of UCC one of them being laid down in two letters published on the 7th and 8th May 2018 which barred telecommunications companies from selling sim cards through hawkers, street vendors and street agents. Telecommunication companies were also required to follow certain procedures in order to register their subscribers which Africell has allegedly violated.

The commission according to the letter received numerous complaints about the violations by Africell, which it is basing on to suspend their license.

The telecommunication company has been conditioned to present its defence to UCC, indicating their reasoning as to why their license should not be suspended. The letter adds that “…should the Commission does not receive sufficient representations…the commission shall proceed to suspend Africell Uganda Limited’s PIP and PSP license”.

The suspension gets its legal backing from the Uganda Commissions Act 2013 which empowers UCC with the discretion to suspend a license of a company that does not comply with its terms and the law.

It comes with a solid 6-inch FHD+ screen with 2.5D glass display, Android 8.1 Ore-powered device impresses even more in its internal memory configurations and camera sensors and a massive battery of 3750mAh with fast charging capabilities (MediaTek Pump Express). Because Camon continues to command such great respect when it comes to photography, the Camon X Pro flaunts a 24MP CLEAR SELFIE. I only put that in capital letters because it was the only I could shout it out.

The Camon X Pro will be going for only UGX 940,000 and you can get it from Tecno branded outlets in Town especially Kampala Road!

NITA-U Executive Director James Ssaka quizzed over shs928m land fund cash

0

The Commission of Inquiry into Land Matters has questioned the Executive Director of NITA James Ssaka on his receipt of 928 million shillings from the Land Fund. The commission learnt that Ssaka received the money in 2015 for land which was worth 15 million shillings in 2003.

Evidence presented before the seven-member Commission shows how government officials at the Uganda Land Commission (ULC) in connivance with businessmen and influential people in government offices fraudulently acquired billions of Shillings from the land fund.
The land fund was established under Section 41 of the Land Act to bring to an end the long-standing conflict in regard to multiple interests on land in the counties of Bugangayizi and Buyaga, Bunyoro Subregion.

Today the Nita-U Boss appeared before the committee of other the same. Here’s a video of the proceedings;

Is Airtel Internet Your Friend?: A week of speedtests and the 4G LTE experience

0

In September 2017, Airtel Uganda finally launched their 4G LTE network heavily investing in the upgrade across Kampala, Entebbe and Wakiso and a further 126 sites across the country. After the upgrade, customers were given a chance to upgrade their sim cards to 4G and many rushed because of the 4GB internet bundles that came along with it.

For a while now, customers have continued to share their experiences about the network and even though Airtel’s 4G network has not fully stabilized in most parts of the country, it has often given a certain hours fine speeds that many have enjoyed.

For the last two weeks, we had a chance to take on Airtel Internet and subject it to the heaviest of things one can do on the Internet, from Torrenting movies off sites, to streaming them on Netflix to having Spotify play all the time when you get a chance. We tested both 3G and 4G speeds and where they work best for anyone looking for a fine experience on the Internet while.

4G Internet is the fourth generation of broadband cellular network technology, succeeding 3G. A 4G system must provide capabilities defined by ITU in IMT Advanced. Potential and current applications include amended mobile web access, IP telephony, gaming services, high-definition mobile TV, video conferencing, and 3D television.

On our first speed tests, we managed to get up to about 11mbs of speeds around Ntinda and Bukoto using 4G LTE. At this time, aside from running social media apps, we were running a few streams and downloads at the same time. For the greater part in deeper Ntinda, we were plugged to 3G speeds but with minimal complaints as this aided the movie binge plan on Netflix without a buffer in speeds (I, however, must advise you that your data will be galloped really fast while on this Netflix plan)

Airtel’s 4G speed does depend on the strength of your signal and the network load. 4G LTE networks are so fast that when using one on your phone, your Internet experience is about as good as it is on a home computer connected to a modern wireless broadband network.

If you need or want the fastest speeds available from Airtel Uganda, you will have to buy a smartphone that supports 4G LTE. In addition, you will want to check the coverage maps for different carriers to see who offers 4G LTE in the most areas, or at least the areas where you spend the most time such as your home and workplace. It’s also a good idea to visit a wireless retail location to test the different network speeds yourself. You will find a noticeable difference between 3G, 4G, and 4G LTE. iPhones, however, are giving you absolute 4G LTE and all you’ll need is a 4G enabled sim card.

Noticeably, there was an increase in upload and download speeds later in the night and a little slower during the day. This was because, at night, not many people were clogging it up while during the day, it’s understandable many people are on the Internet.

By now,you might have probably had a feel of the Airtel 4G Internet speeds and if you haven’t yet, Airtel is still swapping 2G and 3G SIM cards to 4G – free of charge at their outlets. For now, share with us your experience while using the 4G LTE Internet from Airtel in the poll bellow;

Shell EasyGo card online sign up enabled

0

Following the launch of the Shell EasyGo card in February 2018, the card has attracted a lot of attention from our customers with massive sign up and usage. Vivo Energy Uganda has made the card even more convenient and easy by providing an online sign-up alternative for customers who may not have the time to go to our Shell service stations to sign up.

Customers can now conveniently sign up for the Shell EasyGo card directly from the EasyGo portal http://easygo.ug/ and have it delivered to their preferred Shell service station for pick up.

The EasyGo card is an all-around Visa-enabled payment solution that allows you to manage your fuel, service your car, shop at our service stations, other Visa outlets and online. Customers can enjoy cashback for every transaction made at Shell service station forecourts, as well as amazing discounts for promotions.  The card can easily be topped up with mobile money and cardholders can get SMS alerts after every transaction.

“Since we launched the Shell EasyGo card on the premise of providing convenient and relevant solutions to our customers, we are making it easy for our customers to get the card using the online card sign up platform. The EasyGo card was developed because of the growing trend of cashless and online transactions in Uganda,” said Vivo Energy Uganda’s Managing Director, Gilbert Assi.

The card enables customers to buy fuel, service their cars, shop at Shell service stations, buy or refill their gas, and eat at our partner restaurants like KFC, Café Pap, Prunes, Pizza Hut and Java House. It also allows them to shop online and pay for goods and services at any outlet all over the world that accepts Visa payments.

For even more convenience, EasyGo card owners can;

  • Top up via Mobile Money by dialling *233*40# or at any Shell service station countrywide
  • Use the EasyGo card at Shell service stations countrywide
  • Receive an SMS for every transaction they make, so they can track usage
  • Securely transact with the ‘chip and pin’ security feature in the card
  • Access a self-service online portal https://www.thecardservicesonline.com/ugncustptl/ where they can view their real-time account balances, transaction statements and also change/reset their pin, block or mark the card as lost whenever they need to.

This means that the task of planning and budgeting for fuel for individuals and for commercial motorists, including drivers, boda-boda riders, taxi operators, and fleet owners is made easier. It further removes the need for motorists to carry cash for fuel and shopping, thus reducing the risks that come with carrying cash.

Uganda Police announces launch of two Apps; Lost and Found App and Access to Police Station App

0

The Uganda police have announced the launch of two Mobile Applications known as the ‘Lost and Found App’ and ‘Access to Police Station app’. The announcement was made this morning by AIGP Asan Kasingye at the Police headquarters in Naguru at a press briefing.

The application also known as the “Mobi App” provides users with details about the Uganda Police. Information about lost and found property, Police stations near you with respective contacts of officers, as well as the Police leadership structure.

In his remarks, AIGP Asan Kasingye noted that; “The Uganda Police Force has a constitutional mandate of protecting life and property. Actually, one of the rights we are born with and is universal is the right to property. Recently, we have realized that due very many reasons, the rate at which the Police is protecting this right, leave alone recover the property & bring the perpetrators to justice is reducing”

In 2006, the UPF developed a 5-year sector strategic plan for statistics to operationalize the above database systems. Limited progress has been made with regard to its implementation and as a result of the UPF still has no central information management system. The collection, analysis, dissemination of statistics have remained poor and uncoordinated.

He further noted that “This could be explained by many factors which include, advanced technology that is unmatched with Police innovation, lack of trust & confidence in the Police by the Public, poor investigations, etc. As a result, quite often than not, many Police stations are littered with many unclaimed properties or the owners cannot adduce enough evidence to prove that the property belongs to them.”

The Apps are set to tackle the following;

  • Improve rights of people
  • Reduce the incidence of property crime
  • Quick and timely reunification of property to their owners
  • Improve professionalism, discipline through maximizing technology
  • Improve access to police services for which the public are entitled
  • Improve access to information. The public must be informed of the property and existence of police station in their locations for ease of access to police services
  • Improving openness and Transparency through efficient service delivery
  • Improve value for money
  • Gender Equality
  • Redress i.e. if the promised standard of service is not delivered, the public must be offered a full explanation and a speedy and effective remedy and improve the image of the Police.
