ICT Parliamentary Committee pays an official visit to Raxio Data Centre

0

During a courtesy visit to Raxio data Centre in Namanve on Monday 1st August, 2022, The Parliamentary Committee of Information, Communication Technology and National Guidance have applauded Raxio Data Centre for contributing immensely to Uganda’s technology sector The visit aimed at reviewing and assessing Raxio Data Centre’s impact on Technology and National Development in Uganda.

The Committee, led by the Vice Chairperson, Hon. Nabeta Igeme were guided around the facility by Raxio Uganda’s Vice President of Technology and Operations, Abdul-Rahman Ahmed, who led them through a portion of the data centre and its technicalities.

‘I want to take this opportunity to recognize and thank Raxio Data Centre for the initiative to invest in Uganda’s technology sector to the tune of 15M USD. I have been to other developed countries with tier 4 data centres; to have such a facility in Uganda that is almost at the same level as those centres is truly impressive and shows how we are progressing as a country as far as technology is concerned” said Hon. Igeme.

In his remarks, Raxio’s Abdul-Rahman said, “We appeal to the government to come and partner with us. We have already made a huge investment; I don’t see why a government would be interested in building a data centre as it would be much easier for government institutions whose core business is not managing data to entrust their data to a trusted facility such as Raxio Data Centre so that they can concentrate more on their core businesses.”

On that note, Hon. Igeme agreed that it was important for the government to work with the private sector on such initiatives as the government alone might not be able to run such a technical centre effectively.

What the future holds for sports betting?

0

It is not that easy to predict the future. Nobody knows for sure if a particular kind of sport will remain as popular as it is nowadays. Thanks to the internet, it is possible to at least get some interesting statistics that will help to forecast the situation with sports betting in the next 5 years (2022-2027). This is important for all kinds of users, because thanks to this information it will be much easier to figure out what to expect from this industry in a certain region and trends are going to be the most impactful.

Key aspects that can change the sports betting world

According to many research labs in countries, like Tanzania, it is possible to see the growth of popularity for the online sports betting market. Millions of people from around the world already know how to bet on football online and they do not need to read any kind of a guide, because they have seen tons of ads. Even on American television that was previously famous for banning any commercial that contains at least some kind of information on gambling, now it is possible to find full scale ads dedicated to online casinos and sportsbooks.

There are a couple of reasons why people have decided to use online gambling platforms more and one of them is COVID-19. The pandemic has changed the world forever by making internet communication much safer and faster than ever before, because online platforms have become the only way for many to at least somehow interact with other people online. But COVID-19 was not the only reason, because gamblers need to keep in mind that with each year, the number of people who own a smartphone or tablet increases significantly.

Crypto is the way to go

For way too many people, the increasing global popularity of sports betting (football in general) online had one significant issue – they were unsure if they could trust a certain sportsbook company. Looks like the solution to this problem was found years ago and now it has become available for so many players around the world. Many companies in Tanzania, including Parimatch have started to use cryptocurrencies for sports betting, allowing people to feel much safer. They no longer need to manage their bank account in order to make a couple of bets on the online sportsbook, which is already great.

Crypto also creates an opportunity for people to place bets from literally any place in the world. Players will not need to worry about some kinds of international financial systems, such as SWIFT. The only thing that should be made by the player is the registration of the crypto wallet. It can be both online or offline and the gambler will be ready to go.

Globalization of the sports betting market

In the last couple of years, Europe was among top growing markets for sports betting. Globalization allowed many companies to create their branches in new regions, which was great for the overall growth of the sports betting industry. Among top three  countries that generate the most profit in Europe:

  • United Kingdom;
  • Germany;
  • Spain.

People in these countries love to make bets on football by using multiple leagues beets, pre-match activities and in-play opportunities. But considering these regions are at their peak, big companies, like Parimatch keep searching for new markets and East Africa feels like the best region to choose right now.

Many people of Tanzania are thrilled to have an opportunity to bet on the FIFA World Cup, European Championships or other global events. Thanks to global brands that see an opportunity to make such countries a priority in the next 5 years, it becomes obvious that the sports betting industry will only grow in its popularity and it looks promising for millions of gamblers from around the world.

3 Techie Trends for Today’s Teens

0

If there is one thing that most, if not all, teens have in common it would be their love of technology. As an example, how many teens have you seen that don’t have their ever-present smartphone with them? From taking selfies to chatting with friends, there probably isn’t a handful of teens in your community that don’t rely on technology of some kind to “make it through the day.” Do you have a special teen you are trying to find a perfect gift for? You can’t go wrong if it’s something trending in technology today. Check these out as examples of what your teen might really enjoy.

1. Gaming Headset

One of the most distracting things for parents is being able to get a hold of their kids when they know, without a doubt, that they are in the house playing their favorite video games. So, how hard can it be to hit that little green phone icon to connect a call? Well, it can be pretty difficult if they can’t hear the phone ringing over the din of the video game that they are entrenched in. Why not buy them a gaming headset that can be switched over to phone mode while playing their games? For a little more money, you can get the wireless version, which makes it an even sweeter gift for a techie teen who doesn’t like to sit still in one spot for very long.

2. Smart Earbuds

When looking for teens electronic gadgets, smart earbuds are the perfect gift. These are wireless and connect via Bluetooth technology. They can usually pair with at least two devices simultaneously and many have superior sound so that they can be used for both phone calls as well as for enjoying the trending music of the day. This really is the perfect gift for a teen who is always on the move because they will have the ultimate experience in mobile sound.

3Streaming Music Subscription

Speaking of mobile sound, what about a streaming music subscription? This pairs nicely with the gift of smart earbuds if it’s a major life event you are celebrating with them like their transition to “adulthood” at their 18th birthday or graduation from high school. Give them the gift of music along with those earbuds with superior sound. It doesn’t get much better than this! Imagine, a streaming music subscription and smart buds so that they can enjoy their favorite tunes without ever missing a call from mom.

Is there anything trending higher than video games or music in today’s teen culture? When it comes to technology, anything related to either gaming or music will automatically be a big hit for any gift for any occasion in the life of a teen. Bear in mind that there are few activities any teen enjoys that doesn’t have something to do with technology in one way or another. Be it VR, AR, gaming, sound, or photos, if it’s technology, it’s something they will love – guaranteed.

Uganda and Africa are ready to join the future of cloud

0

It is sometimes too easy for the world to wrongfully assume that Africa lags too far behind the global cloud innovation revolution happening. That is a fundamentally flawed outlook.

As of 2021, our continent accounted only for USD 1,2 billion of the global public cloud market, it has more than doubled in the past three years and continues to grow exponentially year on year. Soon, Africa will be among the world’s leading cloud innovators, and countries like Uganda will be at the forefront.

It has been inspiring to witness first-hand the continued growth of Uganda’s tech sector. Ongoing expansion and improvement of data infrastructure are playing a critical role in pushing national economic growth beyond expectations.

As of September 2020, internet subscriptions in Uganda surpassed 20 million. This equates to one connection for every two Ugandans. The pandemic only intensified this growth as many businesses adopted remote working methods – calling for more adept cloud adoption strategies.

It would not be surprising to see 2022 become the year many African industries witnessed a massive surge in cloud solutions. This is already driven by the impetus of digital transformation strategies across the board and a need to gain competitive advantage in a new normal.

The reality of Africa’s historical low economic growth is the very reason that the continent is ideally suited for speedy adoption of cloud technology. As Uganda, and the rest of Africa, look towards economic recovery and growth, cloud is the answer to cutting costs and increasing efficiencies as businesses move away from the requirement of hardware and installation.

But this doesn’t happen overnight, and it certainly doesn’t happen alone.

Liquid’s cloud ambition lies in partnership

At Liquid Intelligent Technologies (Liquid), we have proudly built Africa’s largest independently owned fibre network. While that is a fantastic achievement, our ambition also lies in the cloud. We are part of a mission to build Africa’s largest-ever data centre in Lagos, Nigeria, which is being spearheaded by Africa Data Centres, another organisation under the Cassava Technologies House of Brands. This development will spur cloud innovation that has never been seen before on African soil. However, this will require some key players.

As Liquid continues to make headway with the East-West fibre lines across the continent, especially through areas like the Congo, more interest will be generated from these multinational tech giants – adding to the exponential growth curve.

Cloud is the best Cyber Security on the market

One of the biggest deterrents of cloud adoption lies in the belief that a migration to the cloud will lead to more cyber-attacks. The advancement and rising complexity of the average cybercriminal syndicate means that every business and customer that utilises connectivity services should be mindful of the growing need for cybersecurity and, by default, cloud services.

This will need accredited and capable partners to bring this to life. Liquid’s offering is designed to protect customers at every intersection of their digitally transformed business including network, people, and systems, revolutionising how Cyber Security is approached.  Our approach provides small and large business owners, enterprises, and government entities with secure cloud services that helps them get an edge of their competitors on the continent and beyond.

Cloud is the pathway to start-up success

The last two years have emphasised the need to leverage digital channels to deliver on value propositions. Cloud allows businesses, especially those who are young and ready to grow, a pathway that is ready to scale at a moment’s notice.

Since latency is such a widespread issue in Africa, serving a customer as quickly as possible is the key to competitive advantage, which is life or death in a start-up landscape. Nobody wants to see loading screens and unnecessary buffers when trying to access mission-critical systems. As soon as the customer experience is interrupted, the customer is already thinking of the competitor.

However, none of this would be possible without a key player in the market who understands the need for resilient and scalable infrastructure—those being infrastructure providers like Liquid.

We also need enablers at a grassroots level. Engines and drivers of business success like The Innovation Village – Uganda’s fastest growing start-up engine. In 2017, Liquid Uganda partnered with the Innovation Village to support Ugandan start-ups with high-speed internet and cloud-based services. Today the Innovation Village engine has hosted over 140 start-ups with over USD3m in funding raised. By connecting our start-ups with the cloud skills, they are ready to connect to our cloud infrastructure and kick-off their digital journey.

The continent needs more proud enablers of cloud success. Through the right partnerships, programmes and events, we can continue to provide a platform for businesses and entrepreneurs alike to succeed in a digital economy and do so through the cloud – one of the most significant enablers of the fourth industrial revolution.

Charles Mbire gains $1.2 million as stake in MTN Uganda surges above $51 million

0

Ugandan businessman and MTN Uganda Chairman Charles Mbire has seen the market value of his stake in MTN Uganda surge above $51 million in just two days, as the share price in the leading telecom company increased by a single digit.

The single-digit bump in the share price caused the market value of Mbire’s stake to gain UGX4.42 billion ($1.24 million) in less than two days.

The million-dollar increase in the value of his stake came after Uganda’s largest telecom company delivered the country’s largest-ever IPO through the listing of 22.4 billion ordinary shares on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE).

Upon completing the largest IPO in Uganda’s history, MTN Uganda raised a record UGX535 billion ($150.4 million) from the applications that it received for a total of 2.9 billion shares, including incentive shares.

As of press time, Dec. 7, shares in the company were trading at UGX204.95 ($0.0574), down six basis points from their opening price this morning.

Data gathered by Billionaires.Africa revealed that since the telecom company registered its shares on the Ugandan bourse on Mon., Dec. 6, its share price has increased by 2.5 percent from UGX200 ($0.056) to UGX204.95 ($0.0574) as of the time of writing, as retail investors sustained buying interest long after the public offering.

The increase in the company’s share price caused the market value of Mbire’s 3.98-percent stake to rise from UGX178.45 billion ($49.96 million) to UGX182.86 billion ($51.2 million).

In less than two days, his stake gained more than UGX4.42 billion ($1.24 million).

In a statement after the successful listing of MTN Uganda’s shares, Mbire said the IPO shows the confidence that Ugandans and other investors have in the company, its brand and strategic intent.

“We commend all the regulators for their support in our work to become a USE-listed company and to comply in a timely manner with the listing provisions of the national telecommunications operators’ license,” he said.

Germany’s Biolitec demos laser surgery technology in Uganda

0

Biolitec, one of the leading medicine companies in the world has piloted the technology of laser surgeries in Uganda.

In partnership with healthcare providers in Uganda, Biolitec has provided demo laser surgeries to enhance patient experience and introduce new treatment options for different conditions.

The demo surgeries carried out for four days are intended to equip the surgeons with the necessary knowledge and confidence to take on this new world of technology and use it to therapeutically transform lives of Ugandans.

Earlier this week, Mulago National Referral Hospital carried out its first spine surgery using laser technology.
According to Dr. Michael Oling, a Ugandan surgeon, laser technology provides cheaper but effective solutions for surgeries.

“With the application of these new technologies within our health system, patients will no longer have to fly out of Uganda in the search for these minimally invasive therapies,” Dr. Oling said.
He explained that whereas laser technology has been available for a number of years in the world, it has been slowly adopted in Uganda.

“Personally I was introduced to this technology in 2016 by Biolitec. We were three surgeons trained and we have tried to scale the procedures trying to include our colleagues. To do these surgeries you have to be trained so as to minimize complications.”
Making a case about laser technology for surgeries, Dr. Oling said “it is highly effective, we are able to use it to deliver effective and long-term results for a variety of conditions.”

Dr.Oling says using laser technology for surgeries, there are many success rate, high patient satisfaction, short learning curve for surgeons, freedom from pain and symptoms, maximum preservation of sphincters and quick return to everyday life activities among others.

He noted the later surgery technology is now already available at International Hospital Kampala, Mulago Hospital, Ruby Medical Center and Nakasero Hospital, Norvik in Kampala.

He noted that efforts are ongoing to equip healthcare providers and engage health authorities to ensure it is rolled out in upcountry medical facilities.

5 Simple Projects for Electronics Enthusiasts

0

Electric components are easy to get hold of these days, and all you need is a little know-how and some basic tools to start putting together simple electronic projects. To get you started, there are plenty of channels and videos on YouTube with the sole purpose of teaching basic electronics. Alternatively, if you want to have official proof of your skills, you can take a simple course to show you the basics. Throughout this article, we will introduce you to five simple projects suitable for any electronics enthusiast.

Battery-Powered USB Charger

Countless devices are charged through USB cables these days, which is why this battery-powered USB charger is a go-to for first electronics projects. Yes, you could just go to Amazon and buy a power bank, but where’s the fun in that? You can choose any enclosure you like for your project, but the most popular choice is an Altoids tin because it’s small enough for the parts and can easily be covered. You can be as creative as you like with this project, and the best part is that you’ll get plenty of usage out of it.

Supercapacitor USB Light

The supercapacitor USB light is a really simple design that utilizes a supercapacitor to give power to an LED light. The USB is used to charge up the supercapacitor, which can be used to power the LED light while unattached. You likely won’t get much use out of this design, but it’s fun and introduces you to the idea of new components. To source your equipment, use an online search engine like Octopart, which is the best semiconductor lookup site.

MiniPOV v4

The MiniPov4 brings programming to the mix, which can be enough to put anyone off. However, the input is simple and can be copied and pasted into the device. You can get the whole kit online and there are plenty of videos that show you how to assemble a persistence-of-vision toy. If you’re not happy with the default programming, you can easily tweak the output by editing a couple of lines.

LED Throwies

This project is designed to be simple and adds a bit of fun to the mix. You can use these LED throwies to decorate rooms with fun colors. Essentially, all you need to do is attach an LED and a watch battery – you can see how they work here

1/8” Stereo Mixer

Circling back to the Altoids tin, we can use it to create a stereo mixer. This is a basic electronics project that lets multiple input devices be connected to the likes of car stereos. When you first have a look at the project, you may feel a lot is going on, but keep in mind that it’s relatively simple and you will get plenty of use out of it.

Electronics are everywhere, which makes them perfect for your next project. There is a relatively little cost involved, and all you need is a bit of knowledge. The majority ofinstructions can be followed online with simple videos lighting the way.

How to Raise Money for a Political Campaign

0

A politician can have great ideas and be well equipped to lead, but if they can’t amass a significant war chest, they just won’t be part of the discussion. This is the harsh truth about politics. No matter how good a candidate is, it’s the money backing them that puts them in a position to get elected. So, if you’re an aspiring politician and you want to be elected into public office, you will need to learn how to raise funds first and foremost. Let’s take a look at a few ways to raise money for a political campaign.

Build Your Online Presence

Campaigns are won and lost online these days, and, unless you build your online presence and know how to reach people online, you don’t stand much of a chance.

To begin with, you need to have a solid website. It has to look professional and present you in the best light possible. It should also contain different types of content. It’s a good idea to consider placing a greeting video on your home page so people can tell what you are about fast.

Your donation page needs to be expertly crafted too as it will be one of your most indispensable tools for raising funds. It has to be clear with an easy-to-find donation button. You also need to give people multiple options for donating money.

Have a system in place to gather people’s emails as well and make sure that you get their consent to send them messages through email, physical mail, and SMS. This brings us to our next point.

Use SMS Marketing

SMS marketing is one of the most powerful tools a political campaign can use. SMS marketing allows you to deliver your message right in front of the eyes of your constituents at a time when they are the most attentive.

People rely on their smartphones more than ever, and it’s estimated that the average American spends over five hours per day looking at their phones. This means that you need to get on their screens to get their attention.

Start looking for a good SMS platform that will allow you to craft elaborate well-segmented campaigns. Here, we suggest you check out Tatango’s political campaign SMS marketing platform. Tatango is also a great resource if you want to know the ins and outs of using political campaign SMS properly, so visit their website to find out more.

Organize Events

Events where you get to give back and connect with the community genuinely while providing entertainment are among the best ways to both get funds and let people know who you are as a candidate. You could hold rallies, but small events like community picnics can be a great way to build grassroots support and a loyal donor base.

Conclusion

The above are only a few ways that you can get donations for a political campaign. They are all very efficient, however, and could get you the bulk of your donations, so consider using them in combination with other tactics.

The Most Infamous Phishing Attacks Ever Conducted

0

Phishing and spear phishing attacks are relatively simple to conduct but can have devastating consequences. In order to conduct a phishing attack, a hacker sends a seemingly innocent email to a member of an organization. This email may appear to contain important information or lead to a legitimate login page. When an organization members click on a link within the offending email, they will be directed to a bogus site. This site will either harvest their login details or install malware onto their computer. Alternatively, a phishing scam can simply involve requesting sums of money in such a way that the request seems legitimate enough to process. Phishing scammers have made millions of dollars simply by asking for money while posing as genuine contractors or company departments. Over the years, some phishing scams have stood out from the crowd in terms of audacity. Here are three of the most infamous phishing attacks in recent history.

The Google And Facebook Scam

Between 2013 and 2015, an ambitious Lithuanian hacker managed to steal over 100 million dollars from Google and Facebook. The hacker sent emails that contained invoices from a fake computer parts company, which Google and Facebook willingly paid. The scam worked for years, but the game eventually caught up with the hacker, who was extradited to the USA. More and more companies have invested in bringing in help from cybersecurity groups like cybertalk.org in an effort to prevent similarly costly attacks.

The DNC Hack

In the run-up to the 2016 presidential election in the United States, the Democratic National Congress was hacked, and a great deal of sensitive information was leaked. The DNC leaks arguably had a tangible impact on the result of the election – which was won by the Republican Party candidate Donald Trump. Senior figures in the DNC were sent emails that appeared to contain security update information and important statistics. When links within these emails were clicked, hackers were able to gain access to confidential files. The culprits behind this phishing attack are believed to be connected to the Russian state, which was actively seeking to help the election campaign of Mr. Trump. The Russian Federation actively uses phishing and other hacking methods to influence international politics. In this instance, they had a great deal of success.

2015 Ukrainian Power Grid Attack

An equally ambitious attack that made use of phishing occurred one year earlier in 2015. An email sent to a power grid worker in Ukraine installed malware onto a network that enabled the automation of a complete shutdown. Two hundred thirty thousand power consumers in the Eastern European country were deprived of power as the grid was completely taken offline. In 2014 the Russian Federation had annexed the enclave of Crimea and begun supporting rebels in the Donbas region. This naturally meant that fingers started wagging in the direction of Moscow. The Ukrainian government squarely blamed Russian hackers, although some analysts were wary of identifying a perpetrator. Once again, it appears that hacking was being used as a means to punish political enemies.

How to keep your business pest-free

0

There are such ways as using poison and chemicals to rid you of the pests that are already well and truly embedded within your business. However, prevention is must better than cure, so you will need to make sure that these pests that you are looking to get rid of are not then just replaced by others that are all about opportunity and survival, filling their gap.

But it is not just about those within your property itself. Indeedthere are many other pests that live, cause mayhem and destruction, spread disease, and cause no end of problems on the exterior and at the boundaries of your territory as well.

Keep areas clean and tidy

It is important to keep your area clean and tidy and not just on your business premises but also in your external areas too. Pestscome in many different shapes and sizes. Offering them food and shelter is just going to entice them into your business and make it their home.

One of the quickest ways to help prevent pests within your business is to get your employees to clean up after themselves and keep their working areas free from clutter and rubbish. This means that bins will have to be emptied regularly amongst other health and safety procedures being followed.

Make external areas less enticing

Getting on top of your waste area, including your business’s recycling area in your yard, is crucial for deterring pests as they love the warmth and safety of hiding amongst cardboard, and if your general bins are nearby, then they have their food source as well.

However, outdoor pests are not just limited to the furry kind. They can also be in the gangs of youths that have nothing better to do or places to go than to hang around, play loud music, and generally make a nuisance of themselves, whether it is intentional or not.

There are ways in which you can deal with them without having to get angry or confrontational. This is by using Mosquito Loitering Solutions, which are totally harmless, and make the decision to leave the area of your business that of the youths that are collecting, thereby giving off a high-pitched sound.

Have designated food areas

As you are trying to keep your business pest free, it makes good sense to ensure that your employees are given specific areas where they can eat and drink, therefore, lowering the risk of foodstuffs being all over your premises, half-eaten, or leaving debris for pests to find and live off of.

It will also make cleaning your business premises a lot easier as there will be certain areas such as the canteen area that will require a deep clean very regularly whereas the work area will be able to be cleaned a couple of times a day with a deep clean every few days or so to keep the hygiene levels high and the presence of pests to a minimum.
