Equity Unveils a High-Tech Contact Centre

0

As one of the strategies to further improve customer experience and deliver services to its customers conveniently, Equity bank has launched a high-tech contact centre. The new Contact Centre will allow the Bank to deliver improved support conveniently to the nearly 1.6 million customers 24/7.

Customers will be able to interact with highly trained customer relationship officers using state-of-the-art technology to document, categorise and resolve their issues. The contact center has a capacity to accommodate 70 customer relationship officers and shall handle all customer queries, and complaints in the 5 languages widely spoken across Uganda. The languages are English, Luganda, Runyakitara, Luo, and Swahili which were carefully selected to match the Bank’s branch footprint.

The implementation of the new Contact Centre follows Equity’s strategic objective to become a massive retail bank that is highly digitized. In recent years, the bank has grown its customer base from 800,000 in 2019 to nearly 1.6 million customers currently making it the fastest growing financial institution in the country. The new contact centre fits well into the bank’s digital agenda by providing the capabilities to serve customers conveniently online through voice and social media channels.

“We have grown in leaps and bounds and are now working to revolutionise our customer’s experience by creating a culture of obsession with customer service starting with onboarding through to when our customers interact with us. We are building a culture of superior service to address all customer experience pain points, ensure system accessibility, availability, and stability, through digitized operations,’ said the Managing Director Samuel Kirubi

‘We have built standardized processes and procedures to create synergies that have similar experience for customers and staff, as well as deliver a true Equity brand experience driven by the ONE EQUITY principle,’ Kirubi added

Customers who have previously been affected by the long queues in branches can now reach the bank through the contact centre virtually or via phone call instead of visiting branches.

“At Equity, it is important that exceptional service accompanies our product offering. We have therefore intentionally made significant investments in technology specially designed with the customer in mind. However, technology alone is not enough to meet the needs of our customers.  We have combined it with a team of highly trained professionals who have extensive knowledge and are committed to exceptional service aligned to best practices within the banking industry,” Mr. Kirubi added.

The contact centre shall complement other business transformation initiatives the bank is focusing on, to enhance its digital banking capabilities and product offering.

In addition to handling customer complaints and queries, the new Contact Centre shall also support Equiduuka agents and merchants.

O-Farms: Uganda’s first Circular Agribusiness Accelerator is receiving applications

1

O-Farms is a business accelerator initiated by Bopinc and Village Capital, in partnership with IKEA foundation, with the goal of making circularity a mainstream approach for improved livelihoods and sustainability. For implementation of the accelerator activities in Uganda, O-Farms is teaming up with Hive Colab.

The agricultural value chains generate many losses and byproducts that are often disposed of as waste, making agriculture the most relevant sector to leverage on for opportunities for a circular economy in Uganda.

Target sub-sectors

The following agriculture sub-sectors in Uganda generate considerable waste and by-products during production and processing:

Crops (Oil and nut crops, root crops, pulses, plantains, cereals and grains),  Horticulture (Fruits and vegetables and industrial crop processing) Livestock (Cattle, goats, sheep, pigs and poultry), Fisheries (Nile perch and tilapia).

The above sub-sectors have huge potential for circular agribusiness models with tremendous business opportunities and business models for reusing or bringing agricultural food losses or waste and by-products back into the food system by producing human food or food supplements, animal feed, biodegradable packaging for food and beverages, bioenergy, organic fertiliser and compost.

What is O-Farms are looking for in applicants?

Hive Colab is looking for a diverse cohort of SMEs building innovations or business models for bringing agricultural food losses, or by-products back into the food system for:

  • Processing into ingredients for animal feed
  • Processing into biodegradable packaging materials for food and beverages for the food industry Processing into organic fertilizer or compost as inputs for agricultural production
  • Processing for Bioenergy generation for agriculture value chains

Examples include: Using rejected tomatoes for ketchup, banana peels for food packaging or rice husks for animal feed and fertiliser.

What O-Farm have to offer to the selected participants?

Eligibility criteria

Hive colab wants to see circular agribusiness become a mainstream approach for entrepreneurs in Uganda food systems by 2025, to achieve this we will be accelerating a cohort of 11 circular agribusinesses in partnership with Bopinc, Village Capital and IKEA Foundation within a period of 1 and half years to steer the transition from linear to circular food system. We are therefore looking for circular agribusiness SMEs that meet the following minimum eligibility criteria:

  • Legally incorporated in Uganda with at least one founding team member and owner being Ugandan For-profit company or farmer group
  • Must be a growth stage SME with an existing customer base generating sales and revenue (Post- revenue)
  • With an innovative solution for bringing food losses, or the by-products generated in food production or processing, back into the food system
  • Businesses that intend to grow significantly over time, are what typical venture investors refer to as “scalable” businesses – particularly those that explicitly intend to link to larger companies.
  • A strong preference will be given to entrepreneurs that have lived experience with the problems they seek to address.
  • Strong preference will also be given to founding teams that are overlooked by traditional venture capital ecosystems ie: those in the peri-urban areas, and female founders.
  • The existing team of at least 2 full-time members. Ideal organizations will have larger existing staff, but some models may require less full-time support or rely more on contractors.

How To Protect Yourself From DDos Attacks

0

By Dennis Keko Kahindi, CEO of Liquid Intelligent Technologies Uganda

Picture this: It’s Black Friday and it’s time to take advantage of the massive sale on your favourite online shop. You’ve been receiving emails all month in the run-up to the day and you’ve bookmarked several items that you just have to have – and their prices for one day only are ridiculously low. You open the browser, head to the store and….

You find yourself staring at a blank page. The service is unavailable. You refresh. You close the browser and reopen it. You clear your cache. You restart your modem. Rinse, repeat. Still nothing. The site is down.

You phone the site’s customer service call centre and are placed in a queue. After waiting for 20 minutes, you know something is wrong. The queue for a call centre employee is huge. What’s going on?

You check on social media and posts about the Black Friday sale on this retailer are exploding with rage. You’re clearly not the only one having this problem. You are finally able to talk to one of the store’s employees and they say the site is down due to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. You ask how long the site will be down. They don’t know.

This site could be down for hours. It could be down for days. Glumly you go in search on other retail sites for the items you want. They’re not as cheap, but they’re available. As you make your first purchase, you angrily vow never to visit that other online retailer ever again.

DDoS attacks are on the rise

If this scenario sounds frustrating for a customer, imagine what it must sound like if you are the owner of a retail site under the same circumstances. A DDoS attack – which is what happens when an attacker floods a server or network with internet traffic to prevent users from accessing connected online services – can cost you untold damage in both earnings and reputation.

Retail sites are not alone; DDoS attacks can be targeted at any enterprise that operates in the online space, including corporations, financial institutions, NGOs, gaming networks, ISPs and even governments. And unfortunately, they’re on the rise.

In the last year, cybercriminals launched over 9 million DDoS attacks, with around 4.4 million occurring in the second half of 2021. Simply put, no business can afford to be without protection against such attacks. They are a vital part of any cyber security conversation.

Protect your networks

Businesses can guard against against DDoS attacks by purchasing a service that can act as a barrier to any attempt to overload their network with traffic. One such service, Liquid’s recently launched  DDoS Secure mitigate attacks by scrubbing traffic and blocking known attackers or hostile traffic. On top of this, this service can give clients a line of sight into an attempted disruptions by providing reports on any attacks.

Services such as these provide businesses with a crucial layer of protection. They ensure work is not interrupted by DDoS attacks, prevent revenue loss, and safeguard the reputation of their clients. Beyond this, they increase businesses’ potential for growth through tenders and partnerships, by granting them DDoS compliance – more opportunities open up once an enterprise can demonstrate that its network and day-to-day operations are secured against attacks of this type.  With DDoS attacks constantly on the rise, it pays to have higher visibility of potential attacks, be able to automatically mitigate threats and secure your business’s reputation, compliance and its bottom-line. DDoS protection is essential for businesses operating in our ever-increasingly connected world.

Arua City To Host 2022 Clean Energy Fair

1

Households and businesses in the West Nile region will access clean energy products and information on their usage at the upcoming week-long Clean Energy Fair in Arua City.

The theme for the Fair scheduled for September 28 to October 1 at the Market Grounds in Arua City is “Clean Energy Solutions for a Better Life”, and the main objective is to increase awareness and uptake of renewable energy technologies.

The 2022 Clean Energy Fair, the second after one in Gulu in 2019, is part of the bigger campaign to increase the uptake of renewable energy technologies in Northern Uganda and the fast-growing West Nile market.

The activity is jointly organised by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD), Uganda National Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Alliance (UNREEEA) under the GIZ- Promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme (PREEEP), and Energising Development (EnDev) Uganda.

Eng. Simon T. Kalanzi, Commissioner, Energy Efficiency and Conservation Department at MEMD, called upon residents to save money and preserve the environment by switching to solar products, improved cookstoves and other energy-efficient products.

“In trying to tackle the challenge of low electrification levels in the West Nile region while staying mindful of environmental preservation, alternative approaches to support rural transformation and to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were sought, and development partners were brought on board,” he said, citing the Fair in Arua as an avenue for the Ministry to further this cause.

Over fifty companies dealing in renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies will exhibit to the over 1,000 expected to turn up daily during the activity week. The organisers of the Arua Energy Fair intend to further the conversation on effective, sustainable, and clean energy, showcase the various affordable renewable energy options to the people of West Nile and Northern Uganda and offer a platform for people at the grassroots to pick key lessons for the betterment of their lives.

The PREEEP targets consumer behaviour change and is implemented on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The project supports policy improvement, market development, skills development, budget planning, monitoring and evaluation for improved access to renewable energy (RE) and energy efficient (EE) technologies.

GIZ Energising Development (EnDev) Uganda, in close cooperation with MEMD, also facilitates market-based access to modern energy technologies and services for households, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and social institutions.

National Medical Stores (NMS), a government body tasked with the procurement, storage and distribution of essential medicines and health supplies, is set to take part in this weekend’s Rotary Cancer Run.

“In line with our commitment to preventive health and as part of our internal stakeholder engagement activities, NMS is sponsoring 100 staff to this year’s Rotary Cancer Run,” said NMS publicist, Sheila Nduhukire.

The Run will take place on Sunday, 4th September 2022 at the Kololo Independence Grounds.

The initiative by the Rotary Cancer run is meant to raise financial support for the Cancer institute. It will be a physical event after two years of COVID-19 pandemic.

Over 2,100 people die every year in Uganda due to cancer.

NMS has been at the forefront of fighting non-communicable diseases by promoting physical fitness exercises, sports, regular health checkups and mass awareness campaigns.

“We urge Ugandans to eat healthy, exercise regularly, and carry out regular health check-ups in a bid to curb non-communicable diseases, such as cancer thereby reducing the demand for medicines in our health facilities,” said Nduhukire.

Jones will also visit Rotary Peace Centre at Makerere University and tour a number of projects implemented by Rotarians in Uganda which include among others; the Mengo Hospital Rotary Blood Bank, the Rotary Centenary Bank Cancer Ward at Nsambya Hospital, Mulago Heart Institute

Choose wisely: Your internet service provider has the power to make or break your business

1

By David Bagandanswa, Head of Technology, Liquid Intelligent Technologies Uganda

Uganda’s digital evolution and growing connectivity play a critical role in the country’s socio-economic development. High-speed broadband Internet access is fast becoming a part of most households for entertainment, business and social appetites. Therefore, it is crucial to any enterprise looking to maximise the efficiency of its workforce, customer service and profits.

In Uganda, there has been a lot of Government focus on the ICT sector and public-private partnerships with businesses, having aided in the development of an ICT framework and a steadily expanding connectivity infrastructure. With these in place, Ugandan citizens, businesses, NGOs, and the government are well-positioned to take advantage of modern technologies and harness the power of the Internet

Internet access is a part of daily life, whether for business, domestic, or personal use, so selecting an Internet Service Provider (ISP) is critical. When choosing one, however, there are several factors to consider.

For business, the choice of ISP plays a crucial role; beyond reliability, stability and speed, ISPs can offer applications and services governing a host of needs, including email security, domain registration, hosting for websites and software necessary to the effective running of operations.

Given the ever-changing consumer landscape, an ISP’s ability to scale operations and adaptability to meet new and evolving customer demands are also important considerations. Pricingand support, which provides troubleshooting and protects against connectivity outages, are both important considerations. Fibre Optic (whether Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) or business fibre ISP packages) is the preferred option for businesses and households looking for fast, stable, and affordable uncapped connectivity.

Coverage & Reliability

For businesses, whether large or small, it makes sense to choose an ISP with a broad geographical coverage, one that spans a large area, offering them reach regardless of location, rather than an ISP whose connectivity is limited to one or a few areas. This ensures a consistent connection and performance across the company, regardless of where its operations are located, as well as ease of troubleshooting should issues arise.

Reliability is another significant factor. If a business or home internet connection is unreliable, this can lead to users becoming irritated and – in the case of consumers and employees – counterproductive. Whether working from home or on-site, employees who work in a field that cannot risk network interruptions, it is vital to select an ISP with a good track record concerning network reliability.

Client support is an equally important component in this equation; no matter how well recommended an ISP is, at some stage, a client will encounter issues – hardware, software, network downtime – that will impact usage. An ISP with good customer service should be able to have operations back up and running in a timely fashion. The best ISPs understand that clients cannot be left waiting in the dark as to when they will be reconnected, and as such, customer service is a vital part of keeping their client base happy and loyal.

Speed & Scalability

Every home and business is unique. When choosing an ISP, some people prioritise speed, while others consider whether their provider will be able to meet their needs if they pivot or grow in the future.

When looking at speed, it is important to determine what is needed; a large business, for example, will require a faster Internet connection than, say, a private household or a small to medium enterprise (SME) to ensure the smooth running of its operations across various locations and to satisfy the demands of a large consumer base. Therefore, when comparing plans, select the ISP that can supply the required bandwidth and check that the speed advertised will be received.

Furthermore, an ISP must be able to meet the demands of its client’s requirements should their business or personal circumstances change; in the last two years, businesses and their employees all over the world have been compelled to adopt new working practices – remote working, hybrid working environments – as well as new tools to do their jobs. It is essential for an ISP to be able to adapt to whatever the future has in store for their customers, be it positive or negative.

Price & Reputation

There’s an adage that goes, “You get what you pay for.” When choosing an ISP, it is critical to consider the budget and the reputation (brand strength, track record, and customer reviews) of the various players in the field. Is it possible for an ISP to provide you with a cost-effective package based on your requirements? What percentage of its customers are satisfied? Is its local and global standing granting it – and its clients – access to partnerships, products, and a dependable connectivity infrastructure that its competitors can’t match? And, regardless of its clients’ needs, does an ISP check the boxes for the aforementioned aspects?

Choosing the right ISP service provider is one of the most important decisions by a business, irrespective of its size. There are vital pieces of advice included in this article that should help organisations in Uganda make the decision that is most suited for their business needs. Ultimately, businesses need to ensure that their digital transformation journey is seamless and profitable as it adds to the country’s GDP, making Uganda an attractive investment destination.
