CES Trends and Predictions for 2016

0

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) came to an end, but the future it brings is yet to come. CES plays an important role in the tech world. Companies and startups use this exhibition opportunity to show off their most interesting technological concepts. In reality though, many of the products are not that intriguing. We will present a few trends that will definitely become big in 2016.

Virtual Reality Headsets get Real

htcVive
Two companies are in the virtual reality race. Namely, HTC and the famous Oculus Rift. HTC has developed a VR headset with a built-in camera for the added option of seeing the real world around you. The virtual reality elements are then being layered onto the original footage. I find that extremely convenient since it excludes the possibility of trampling over objects in the actual room while using the rig.

According to HTC, Vive will have been released by the end of April 2016. This information is to be taken with a pinch of salt, since they first wanted to release it at the beginning of 2015. They still do not mention the price.

Oculus Rift, on the other hand, has always been a symbol of innovation. Unfortunately, not that many people have actually had access to it in its early stages. From now on anyone will be able to purchase it. More precisely, it will be available by the end of March and it will cost around $600.

OK, so how widespread will these new devices actually be? Most people will not give up 600 dollars for a VR rig. Still, I am sure that many technology buffs and gamers will love it. I know I will. A regular consumer will most probably go with the mobile phone VR headset. This is not a good experience, to tell the truth, since the technology is still under development. Oculus Rift and HTS’s Vive are really the only two products that can offer enjoyment when virtual reality is in question.

Smart Gadgets get Smarter

smartwatch

Smart this, smart that, everything is smart. A lot of companies that exhibit at CES bring out their weird pieces of tech just to see if something sticks. Of course, we all know of smart refrigerators, but what about a smart consumer router that is at the same time a security device? Or, a rubber duck that lets you know when the water is too hot via Bluetooth? Yep, it is all there, but let us not dwell on the weird side of smart.

There are companies that are at the forefront of innovation and product practicality. Such startups and enterprises often rely on attracting young talent that will bring something new to the idea pool. Consequently, wearables are getting increasingly popular. Casio has released a new Android Wear watch that will even be fit to be used for military purposes. That is pretty amazing! Furthermore, a company called FitBits released a smart fitness tracker that for once resembles a real watch. Looking smart Fitbits!

Some devices just do not have to be smart. You know what I mean? I do not need smart scissors to tell me how much nails I have cut. But some devices are extremely useful, like smart audio systems, wearables, connected TVs etc. But manufacturers are now just throwing things at consumers and making notes of what sticks. So be smart about what a smart device is.

Drones get Bigger

drone

Flying a drone is probably one of the most interesting new hobbies to emerge from modern technology. However, most consumers do not really ue drones. At CES they are everywhere, but then again we all do not have a big use for them. Yet.

Amazon and Walmart are in a race of bringing delivery drones to you as a service. Construction companies use them to oversee their workers and tough to reach parts of the building. They are used by real estate agents for taking pictures of houses. A company from China even wants to create taxi drones. So drones are getting big enough to squeeze in a human. Pretty neat stuff.

Computers, Mobile Devices and TVs get Neglected

phone

Finally, the CES stories are not all about mobile phones, new computers and tablets. Of course, there is a great number of new pieces of consumer hardware that we will love, but none of them will completely replace what you already have. Innovations have been made, but your computer is still up to date. They are out of focus now, and have become less interesting. It is a good thing, because we no longer have to worry about keeping up with the compatibility updates.

So, the new tech trends are plenty. Computers and mobile are not that interesting anymore. Make way for taxi drones, wearables, smart cars and a lot more devices with smart as a prefix. Let us just hope they will not come up with a smart brain or something similar. That would just be too much. But, we welcome all the useful pieces technology that emerge and readily move toward our cyber future.

Vodafone Uganda silently lowered its fair usage cap to a terrible 128kbps

4

Vodafone Uganda, a telecom launched early last year with the best unlimited internet packages we had ever reviewed or experienced. The unlimited internet package was cheap and fast since the previous Fair usage Cap (FUP) was at 256 kbps once the FUP data was depleted.

Some users didn’t even have this cap implemented on their router sim cards after our extensive tests while other had the 256 kbps cap activated and the internet experience was rather bad. It’s not until about 3 weeks ago when I noticed the ‘Unlimited Internet speeds’ were unbearable once one had exceeded 35, 50, 60 GB depending on their package.

A visit to the Vodafone website shows that the document was indeed changed to reflect the new misarable fair usage policy which limits you to 128 kbps. For starters 128 kbps is quite slow but the problem is this is a limit to both downloads and uploads which means you won’t be able to get a download over 100 kbps since this is a shared connection.

In a sample test with 3 MiFis, we realized that getting a download at 70 kbps was hard even after using throttling tools which prevented other programs from using the data connection. At such a speed cap, loading pages in very difficult and streaming audio and video was impossible because buffering was a lot.

This means one either has to purchase a regular 4G bundle at uncapped speeds which is expensive or scout for another internet package like smile whose FUP cap is 512 kbps. Well, their policy states that they have a right to change it at any particular time leaves no defense to the consumer who wasn’t reliably informed.

Below are the terms and conditions Vodafone Uganda applies to the following plans, each of which offers unlimited data (the “Unlimited Plans”):

Product Download Speed* Validity FUP Cap Price (UGX)
Unlimited 2mbps/1 2mbps 24 hours 1.5GB 17,900
Unlimited 2mbps/7 2mbps 7 days 8GB 69,900
Unlimited 2mbps/30 2mbps 30 days 35GB 149,900
Unlimited 6mbps/30 6mbps 30 days 50GB 199,900
Unlimited 10mbps/30 10mbps 30 days 60GB 349,900
Unlimited Nite 2mbps 30 days 50GB 79,900
Day and Nite 2mbps 30 days 35GB 199,900
Day and Nite 2mbps 30 days 50GB 259,900

Netflix is now available in Uganda and 130 other countries

0

The popular streaming service Netflix which even has its’ own global trend ‘Netflix and chill’ is now available in Uganda. Netflix which was be only available in a few countries like the USA, UK, Australia and a few other is now available in Uganda without geo-restrictions.

We no longer need to hide behind pricey VPNs and virtual credit cards to access Netflix content. I guess Netflix realised many people in  various countries were doing so which led to a rather global launch. The website no longer shows the hated “Not available in your country” notice but it shows the shows that are available and pricing rates. Netflix can be accessed through the website (netflix.com) and mobile apps on Android, iOS and windows.

Netflix is pricing starts at $7.99 (about 28,000 Ugs) for the basic package, $9.99 and $11.99. I personally recommend the $10 package because it supports high definition playback and you get the ability to watch on 2 screens at a time.

Here is a table showing what each package comes with;

netflix

The prices are better than what you pay for price Pay-TV providers like DSTV but internet packages are very expensive or speeds are capped. The challenge is the Fair Usage Policies of unlimited internet providers are now bogas. Reports from Techjaja show that Netflix will consume up to a gigabyte after an hour of streaming.

You will also notice that coverage map of Netflix is no longer red only on the right. Since its now available almost everywhere except China, and North Korea for reasons based on censorship.

helloWorld

Well, it’s good to have Netflix we only wish ISPs could create internet packages that are suitable for streaming at a low rate.

Hey, Spotify…..what are you waiting for! Africa is giving some dollars to the fruit named company as it waits.

The Nvidia Drive PX 2 at CES 2016 has the Power of 150 Macbook Pros

0

CES is back yet again and bringing all the heat again down here in Las Vegas. The Guru8 team has already pitched its tent and dedicated to bringing you all as it happens live.

Today, we were moving around checking out the Best Tech CES 2016 has to offer and boy Oh Boy we saw some jaw dropping stuff. Focus was put mostly on smart home devices, Fitness and Health Devices and the Smart Cars.

All this will be brought to you in a bit but first we need to blow you mind by the NVIDIA Drive PX 2. It sports 12 CPU cores and has 8 teraflops worth of processing power — similar to about 6 Titan X video cards. This is a supercomputer with the equivalent of 150 Macbook Pros and wait for it…. It’s gonna be used to run a self-driving car, Damn. I know right?

NVIDIA-Drive-PX-2-Pascal-Powered-Module-635x360

Well, as you must have guessed wrong, this is not a huge device aimed for a “Magulu Kumi” No. It’s a very summarized contraption that fits in a “Lunch Box”. You must be telling me to “Gerr outta here” in your mind but bear with me, am not making any of this up.

So, these guy are blaming all the fatalities of a car Humans. This has been rounded off to nearly a Million fatalities across the world each. These guy have concluded with making a self-driving car and eliminating the Human.

Nvidia research recently made the Pascal GPU which you guys already know about. To make this self-driving car, the machine needed to learn or perceive what is around it. This is where the Pascal GPU came in handy. It was able to boost the self-learning training exercise up to 30 – 40 times. Am entirely basing on the fact that you guys know about Artificial Intelligence in Robots and stuff, keep up guys… Keep.

0104_px2_holding

This whole learning process has been dubbed Deep Learning which is able to achieve super human perception capability, not the Avengers Super Human caps but am guessing heightened sense of Hearing, Sight et cetera

All in a nut shell, this juggernaut has the ability to recognize every single object be it simple or complex. So in lay man language, it can detect a car, pedestrian or stray dog crossing the road. It was able to achieve this Image Net Data Set in just a month and without the Pascal GPU acceleration, that would have taken years, trust me.

0104_nvidialidar

During this training, one feature was coded by hand. Which is basically holding out Millions of Flash cards for the computer to recognize them. And also, correcting it when it gets them wrong. Sounds like a pile of work.

Apart from objects, these guys were put to the test of making this computer aware of circumstances as well. Things like types of buses, for example to stop when it’s a school bus and not to when it’s just a regular passenger bus, pulling a side when there’s an ambulance and things of the sort.

There you have it guys, if you think you have that paper, begin warming up. Hope it hits the market soon. Keep it here at GURU8 for more updates on CES 2016

The new WiFi standard ‘WiFi Halow’ offers more range for less power

0

The WiFi Alliance unveiled a new WiFi standard that is aimed at connecting smart homes called ‘WiFi Halow’.

With industry momentum mounting around a low power Wi-Fi® solution, Wi-Fi Alliance® has introduced Wi-Fi HaLow™ as the designation for products incorporating IEEE 802.11ah technology. Wi-Fi HaLow operates in frequency bands below one gigahertz, offering longer range, lower power connectivity to Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ products. Wi-Fi HaLow will enable a variety of new power-efficient use cases in the Smart Home, connected car, and digital healthcare, as well as industrial, retail, agriculture, and Smart City environments.

Wi-Fi HaLow extends Wi-Fi into the 900 MHz band, enabling the low power connectivity necessary for applications including sensor and wearables. Wi-Fi HaLow’s range is nearly twice that of today’s Wi-Fi, and will not only be capable of transmitting signals further, but also providing a more robust connection in challenging environments where the ability to more easily penetrate walls or other barriers is an important consideration. Wi-Fi HaLow will broadly adopt Wi-Fi protocols and deliver many of the benefits that consumers have come to expect from Wi-Fi today, including multi-vendor interoperability, strong government-grade security, and easy setup.

Spotify is being sued $150 million for unpaid royalties

0

A class-action lawsuit filed this week claims that Spotify knowingly and willingly distributes songs without obtaining the proper, mechanical licenses, Billboard reports. The suit, filed by the band Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker frontman David Lowery on December 28th, seeks $150 million in damages. The artists launched a class-action suit because Spotify’s actions affect more than 100 people, according to the complaint.

Spotify recently penned a blog post that lays out the complicated music-licensing landscape, noting that it’s paid out more than $3 billion in royalties since launching. It has a store of money set aside to pay outstanding fees, too — Billboard says this reserve fund contains between $17 million and $25 million.

“When we confirm the rightsholder, we pay those royalties as soon as possible,” Spotify writes in its blog post. “To put this all in context, the royalties we have set aside amount to a fraction of one percent of all the royalties we have paid.”
Spotify is working to settle a similar suit with the National Music Publishers Association

Should we say Goodbye to the USB Drive?

0

A wise man once said that a true progress does not come in steps but in occasional leaps. Digital storage is no exception to this rule. The first great transition was the one from floppy disks to CDs, and it was something that was completely revolutionary back then. Even though the DVD was far superior to its CD counterpart, there was no major occurrence of these proportions until the USB drive arrived. The advantages of USB drives were so great that some people believed that this was definitely a pinnacle of digital storage. Little did they know that soon, cloud computing is going to change all of this once and for all.

  • A Matter of Space

Now, one of the greatest differences between USB drives and CD/DVD was in the fact that most flash drives used to have a lot more space. Of course, the space on a USB drive is quite finite. Once you buy it, that’s it! Once you fill it all up, you simply have to do one of these two simple things. The first one is to start deleting (which is not lucrative at all, as storing practices go) and the second one is buying an additional drive. On the other hand, by the nature of cloud storing, you first get some initial storage space for free, after which you can additionally buy as much more as you need.

  • Getting Misplaced

When we speak about losing the little drive, the first thing we have in mind is it getting stolen. Because of their sizes and capabilities, USBs are common targets for pickpockets of various kinds. However, there is yet another risk, the risk of losing or forgetting it someplace. It often happens that it simply falls out of your pocket, or gets forgotten on the shelf after you move. This way all your data will be lost and this is not something that you can afford. Needless to say, a thing like this can never happen by utilizing cloud storage services.

  • A Matter of Security

As we have already mentioned, the drive is easy to fall out of your pocket or even get stolen. When this happens, unless it is encrypted, anyone can access your most private piece of data that you had stored. This is definitely a cause for alarm. Even though it had some rough patches in the past, most experts agree that the security of cloud technology is now stronger than ever. Furthermore, there is an array of things you can do to further protect your data, such as coming up with a great password or better yet, encrypting your files.

  • Availability

Even though there are many perks that cloud technology brings to the table, most agree that its greatest advantage is availability. In fact, people behind pCloud claim that the very fact that you can access your cloud storage from any terminal in the world, will make USB drives completely obsolete. Whether or not this will be the case yet remains to be seen.

  • Retrieving Data

Every once in a little while, you will accidentally delete a wrong file, or remember you need something you have previously deleted. By switching to the cloud you will have a nearly unlimited amount of space, so you will seldom be forced to delete anything. However, even if this does happen, the data once stored on the cloud can always be retrieved. This feature alone can often be a lifesaver.

Progress leaves no stone unturned and now it is time for the world of digital storing to undergo an incredible metamorphosis. Even though there will always be pros and cons to any solution, the fact is that, as far as digital storing goes, cloud technology reigns supreme. This means that, in the same way as their predecessors, floppy discs or CD/DVD, the era of USB drives is slowly coming to an end.
