NIRA Extends National ID Renewal Exercise to July

The Executive Director of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), Rosemary Kisembo, has announced that the mass enrolment and renewal of national identity cards, initially set to begin on June 1, has been postponed to July. The exact date for the commencement of the exercise is yet to be confirmed.

“Due to unforeseen delays in the procurement process, the exercise did not take off as planned,” Kisembo stated. “However, we anticipate that by the end of July 2024, the renewal exercise will commence.”

Kisembo emphasized that the government is taking all necessary steps to ensure that national ID renewals are completed before the 2026 general elections. “Aware of the Electoral Roadmap and the expiry of some cards beginning August 2024, the Government is taking all necessary measures to ensure that the delays do not affect service delivery and the roadmap,” she said, adding that consultations are currently underway.

She further explained, “In consultation with the Attorney General’s Chambers, measures are being put in place to ensure that the public suffers no disadvantage because of the delays.”

The initial National ID registration process began in 2014. “In 2014, a similar exercise was successfully carried out in a period of four months. Therefore, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the National Identification and Registration Authority would like to assure the public that the Government will deliver this exercise successfully within the stipulated timelines,” Kisembo assured.

Kisembo also mentioned that NIRA will continuously update the public on the progress of the renewal exercise.

Aptoide, a well-known Google Play alternative for Android devices, is set to launch an iOS game marketplace on Thursday, June 6, in the European Union.

The Aptoide iOS store will debut with a limited selection of titles. However, the company has stated that new games will be added daily, with 30 titles currently undergoing the inclusion process. Initially, access to the store will be limited to users with invitation-only access codes. Aptoide has a waiting list of 20,000 signups and plans to issue between 500 to 1,000 codes per day.

According to The Verge, Aptoide is the first third-party iOS marketplace to launch with an Apple-approved in-app purchases (IAP) solution. This will be provided to developers through an IAP software development kit. Apple’s 50 euro cents Core Technology Fee (CFT) will be covered by a fee charged to developers for in-app purchases, making IAP-driven apps “preferred” in Aptoide iOS, according to the marketplace’s CEO, Paulo Trezentos.

Apps distributed through alternative app marketplaces must undergo a notarization process to ensure they are free from malware. Apple does not impose content restrictions, so apps that might not have been eligible for the App Store can be distributed through alternative means. These alternative app marketplaces are only available within the European Union.

For the past few days now, social media fanatics in Uganda especially those on LinkedIn have been on a wave after Victoria Nyanzi announced the launch of her girls mentorship community dubbed ‘The African Sisters Network‘. The African Sisters Network is a mentorship community dedicated to empowering African girls tell their stories boldly while connecting them to resources and opportunities to thrive.

For the past 15 months, Victoria has been actively creating content on different social media platforms but especially on Linkedin. Writing about so many different topics, she started off sharing her knowledge and tips in resume writing, LinkedIn profile optimisation and career development. Towards the end of last year, she niched down to personal branding after completing a three months Personal Brand training from Image Group International.

Victoria is a renowned Marketing and PR consultant, personal branding coach and LinkedIn Visibility coach.

X to Make ‘Likes’ Private and Remove Likes Tab from Profiles

Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) will soon stop displaying public “likes” on users’ profile pages, the company announced. The plan was confirmed on Wednesday by X engineers after MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris discovered a flag in X’s iOS app indicating the upcoming change.

Perris found that disabling the flag entirely removes the “Likes” tab from all user profiles. His discovery was shared on X and subsequently confirmed by X engineers.

“Yes, we are making likes private,” responded X’s director of engineering Haofei Wang. “Public likes are incentivizing the wrong behavior. Many people feel discouraged from liking content that might be ‘edgy’ for fear of retaliation from trolls or to protect their public image. Soon you’ll be able to like without worrying who might see it,” Wang continued. “Also a reminder that the more posts you like, the better your ‘For you’ algorithm will become.”

To clarify user confusion, X senior software engineer Enrique Barragan posted that users will still be able to see who liked their posts and the like count for all posts and replies. The change involves hiding which posts other people liked, thereby removing the Likes tab from public profiles.

X Premium subscribers have had the option to hide the Likes tab on their profiles, but the platform is now set to remove it entirely. Although the exact timeline for this change is not clear, once implemented, everyone on X, including owner Elon Musk—who has faced criticism in the past for liking controversial posts—will be able to like content privately.

Google is set to construct the first subsea fiber optic cable linking the continents of Africa and Australia, in a move aimed at enhancing global connectivity. This announcement comes amid intense competition among major cloud providers, with Google striving to catch up with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.

The new cable, named “Umoja,” will begin in Kenya and traverse several African countries, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, before reaching South Africa. Google’s announcement follows a series of outages across Africa caused by faulty undersea cables.
