
Microsoft held a security event on July 27, 2026, and came out swinging.
The company announced a new AI security model called MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, designed specifically for software vulnerability analysis, alongside a new agentic security system called Project Perception.
The performance claims are bold. Microsoft says its MDASH system, which pairs MAI-Cyber-1-Flash with OpenAI’s GPT-5.4, scored 96 percent on the CyberGYM benchmark, a score 12 points higher than Anthropic’s Mythos model and ahead of both Google Gemini and OpenAI GPT configurations. The new MDASH also costs half as much to run as the previous version.
Project Perception is designed to handle 90 percent of security tasks at lower cost than competing systems, using a tiered approach where harder problems are escalated to a larger frontier model. The interesting detail is that the “larger frontier model” Microsoft escalates to is OpenAI’s GPT-5.4, meaning Microsoft’s flagship security AI still relies on its longtime partner for the most complex work.
The announcement comes after a leadership shake-up at Microsoft’s security division in February, when Google executive Hayete Gallot returned to run the unit.
