What to Expect at Apple’s ‘It’s Glowtime’ iPhone 16 Event

Apple is gearing up for its much-anticipated ‘It’s Glowtime’ event, where it will unveil the iPhone 16 lineup, among other exciting products and features. The iPhone 16 is set to be Apple’s most powerful smartphone yet, particularly in the Pro models, which are expected to feature the best camera system to date. This year, Apple is also expected to integrate Apple Intelligence, its proprietary AI technology, across the board in all iPhone 16 models.

In addition to the new iPhones, Apple is likely to showcase a range of new products, including updated Apple Watches and AirPods, alongside enhanced AI features. These AI advancements, first teased at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, include an upgraded Siri with the ability to understand on-screen content, image generation capabilities, AI-driven content rewrites, and call recording and transcription functionalities.

The “Glowtime” moniker appears to reference the glow effect that surrounds the screen edges when Siri is activated, as seen in the latest iOS 18 developer betas. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, “glow” also serves as the internal code name for macOS Sequoia, which is expected to be released shortly after the event alongside iOS 18.

New Processors for AI Capabilities

Apple Intelligence is set to require powerful processing capabilities, and all iPhone 16 models are rumored to be equipped with the new A18 chip. This would mark a significant upgrade from the A17 Pro processor in the iPhone 15 Pro, which is currently the only chip supporting Apple Intelligence.

iPhone 16 Design and Features

The iPhone 16 lineup will reportedly feature slight design modifications, including a new arrangement for the rear cameras. The cameras on the standard models are expected to be stacked vertically, reminiscent of the iPhone 12 and iPhone X, rather than the diagonal layout seen since the iPhone 13. This adjustment is believed to enhance the phone’s capabilities for spatial video capture, particularly when viewed on the Apple Vision Pro.

The Pro and Pro Max models may also feature significant improvements, such as 5x “tetraprism” telephoto lenses and a larger 48MP ultrawide camera sensor. Additionally, the Pro models are expected to introduce new color options, including a rose finish and a “bronze” titanium option. The Pro models will also have slightly larger screens compared to their iPhone 15 counterparts, with the Pro’s display increasing from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches, and the Pro Max expanding from 6.7 inches to 6.9 inches.

Apple Watch and AirPods Updates

Apple is also expected to announce the Apple Watch Series 10, which could feature a thinner case and a larger 49mm display option. A refreshed Apple Watch Ultra and a new plastic Apple Watch SE may also be on the horizon.

The AirPods lineup will likely see new additions as well, including entry-level and mid-tier models with Pro-style designs and noise cancellation. These new AirPods will complete Apple’s transition to USB-C for its accessories.

Potential New Mac Mini

Apple may also introduce a new, smaller Mac Mini, potentially featuring an M Pro chip. This Mac Mini could be announced at the iPhone event or during a separate event later in the year.

Event Details

Apple’s ‘It’s Glowtime’ event will take place on September 9th at 8 PM EAT / 10 AM PT in Cupertino, California. The event will be livestreamed on YouTube, Apple TV, and Apple’s website, with live coverage available from various tech outlets.

This event is shaping up to be a significant one for Apple, with major updates across its product lines, including AI advancements that could set the stage for the company’s future innovations.
