Tinder is introducing an AI-powered feature designed to help users select the best photos for their dating profiles. The new Photo Selector tool aims to “take out the guesswork” by curating a diverse selection of images optimized to help users find a match.
To utilize Photo Selector, users must take a selfie within Tinder and grant the app access to their device’s camera roll. The AI feature then employs facial recognition to compile a selection of images for the user to review and add to their profile. Importantly, this curation is processed on-device and does not upload the user’s camera roll to Tinder’s systems. We have reached out to Tinder for clarification on the criteria used to select images and will update if we receive a response.
Tinder states that Photo Selector’s purpose is to help users focus on “making meaningful connections” by saving time when creating dating profiles. A study conducted by the app involving 7,000 18-25-year-olds revealed that young singles spend an average of 33 minutes selecting the right profile photo. The new feature aims to reduce this time, although it may not address the broader issues contributing to dating app fatigue.
Photo Selector will be available for devices running iOS and Android, with the rollout starting in the US in July. Support for international markets is expected to follow “this summer,” according to Tinder.
