Uganda is set to host the 2nd Edition of the Youth for Public Transport Uganda Hackathon. The hackathon which is a brainchild of the Youth For Public Transport (Y4PT) Foundation, with the support of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) its members, implemented Fund Africa Inc in support of other partners like African Mobility Observatory (AMO).
The event will bring about different professionals, university students and other participants from civil, public and private sectors, to develop better transport means/modes of transport in order to ease public transport and create sustainable mobility. The Hackathon will take place on the 28th Jan 2018 with a theme ‘Using Technology to advance the transport sector towards sustainability.’
Running under the theme ‘Using Technology to advance the transport sector towards sustainability’, the event shall be on the 28th of January, 2018.
The first edition of the local Transport Hackathon was hosted in 2016 where Julius Mugaga and team (the winning team for the local Transport Hacked) presented the Serari Security Kit (SSK), an automotive air pollution testing that later saw the team represent Uganda in the Global Transport Hackathon in Montreal. This year, the Youth For Public Transport Foundation (Y4PT) have yet again brought the Transport Hackathon back to Kampala, a project that seeks to gather ideas and develop better transport means/modes of transport in order to create a positive impact on public transport sector and create sustainable mobility as the theme for this year states.
The participants of this edition of the Hackathon shall be tasked to create and develop solutions facing the public transport sector like the ever growing traffic situation, pollution, pedestrians, cyclists, street parking, road safety and emergency handling.
The solutions to the above challenges can be presented through working prototypes, virtual models like animation and video, graphics, simulation models, business and operational models, Mobile Apps, Desktop Apps, Robotics among others that can easily represent the solution idea of the team.
Eligibility and Participation
The Transport Hackathon is open to all groups of people from all kinds of professionals, university students, public and private sectors, project developers, entrepreneurs and anyone with ideas and concepts to improve the transport sector are all free to participate. The winning team for the local Transport Hackathon shall get an opportunity to represent Uganda with an all paid expenses trip to Dubai ( United Arab Emirates) to take part in the Y4TP Global Transport Hackathon and the UITP Global Public Transport summit from the 20th to 25th April of this year. In addition to this, other participants shall be awarded with other various prizes and recognition awards. Note that the event is to take place on the 28th January, 2018 and the venue is yet to be communicated by the organizers.
